Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking a qualified, professional candidate to support the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) 180-foot Research Vessel, (R/V) Lake Guardian. The ship sails extensively throughout the Great Lakes from April through October and is homeported in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. R/V Lake Guardian is the largest vessel in the U.S. EPA fleet and is used to sample water, aquatic life, sediments, and air to assess the overall health of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

Tasks
  • Providing input and logistical support for survey planning (route planning, equipment purchasing, sampling gear design and fabrication).
  • Operating scientific equipment in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and monitoring the data feeds from these devices to the sensor application's workstations used for data acquisitions.
  • Utilizing databases and spreadsheet applications for data input, storage, retrieval, and backup. Enter applicable data into the Great Lakes Environmental Database (GLENDA) application and/or other onboard database systems and applications, including web-based applications.
  • Scheduling and performing maintenance and calibration, as needed, of all scientific instruments/sampling equipment in accordance with the manufactures' specifications and recommendations; inspecting all scientific instruments/equipment to ensure they function properly prior to the surveys.
  • Cleaning of equipment at the completion of each sampling survey, and when traversing from one lake to another, to prevent transport of invasive species or waterborne pathogens.


Requirements

Marine Technician shall be proficient in (1) biological sampling methods, including vertically towed zooplankton nets, benthic grabs, and use of towed equipment for collecting biological samples (e.g. Tucker Trawl, Neuston nets, benthic sled, etc.); (2) deployment, troubleshooting, calibration and maintenance of scientific equipment specified in this Addendum; (3) the application of computers and telecommunications equipment to store, retrieve, transmit data in the context of their shipboard and scientific duties. This shall especially include backing up data stored on the Rosette workstation, Fluoroprobe instrument, benthic video SD cards, and/or other equipment that collects and stores data, after each deployment, to a designated central server.

Minimum education requirement is a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience. The minimum education requirement for the Marine Technician performing additional duties as the shipboard IT support specialist is an Associate or a Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics/Electrical Engineering, or a degree or a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Natural Resources or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience in IT networking technology or hardware/software engineering.
