Job Overview

1. 3. 4. Tooling: (a) evaluates processes for tooling, jigs, and fixtures improvements; (b) seeks tooling feedback to improve safety, quality, and efficiency; (c) procures readily available or can design tooling solutions; (d) procure, trial, and validate tooling; (e) utilizes software to initiate, maintain, and sunset documents - i.e. AutoCAD® , Vault®, Inventor®, SAP, View & Print (V&P), or other; (f) adds tooling to production routers and standard work.

5. Cap/Ex Improvement: (a) assists the site's capital feasibility, annual planning, procurement, and commissioning; (b) be a collection point for potential projects, effectively analyzes ROI, and propose a priority of annual projects; (c) facilitates a comprehensive annual capital plan; (d) creates bid packets, secure/review quotes, and obtain accurate costs; (e) creates an acceptable cost justification; (f) creates project charters and plans; (i) executes projects and improvements within budget and to the stated timeline, following PMI project management phases when applicable; and, (j) commissions Cap/Ex with a cross-functional team that includes EHS, Quality, Production, Maintenance, and/or other key stakeholders.

6. World Class Manufacturing: Understand the basic concepts of manufacturing engineering best practices, concepts, principles, and practices. For example, basic concepts such as Lean Manufacturing, and applying practical principles and techniques wisely (i.e. Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), Error-Proofing, Quality Circles, Small Improvement Events or Kaizen, or other if / when applicable, or research and develop other innovative solutions.

Key Job Responsibilities

1. Daily Shop Engagement: Go/See the production work areas regularly, attend recurring / standing meetings that communicate operational needs/requirements to assist with daily operational challenges. Examples may include a daily management meeting, a shop walk-through seeking ways to help resolve daily issues, a shift hand-off meeting, maintenance / production / scheduling meetings, a weekly meeting with the Site Manager, etc.

2. Create Production Routers: Create / update SAP routers for production work. This may include a very formal creation of a production router: (a) define the work centers and sequences that the parts must follow in order to produce the product - including outside services if applicable, (b) define work elements at each work center, (c) create appropriate standard work and include tooling/fixturing/jigs needed to optimize the work, and (d) enter the labor and material standards into SAP with labor and material. Most commonly, the router will include a historical time to perform each tasks but still include routing steps and time estimates to establish standard cost.

3. Engineering Change Control: With daily interactions, become aware of engineering changes that need clarifications, support production or other departments in engineering revision control, ensure current and accurate data is delivered with inquiries being addressed, delivering answers to the shop with a high sense of urgency to mitigate stalls and delays in production. Follow established process to update manufacturing documents as needed - i.e. drawings, production routers, programs, etc.

4. Develop Tooling Solutions: Assess work execution throughout manufacturing and design (via DFMA) and develop jigs, tooling, and fixtures to improve safety, ergonomics, quality, efficiency, and labor. Bring insight and solutions to work independently and/or through soliciting feedback from EHS, quality, production, manufacturing, or design engineering. Design, detail, and document tooling within 2D and 3D software and utilize the Komatsu part numbering and document control systems (ie Inventor, AutoCAD, Vault, SAP, View & Print). Integrate these into documented standard work and within SAP production routers. Lead to procure, validate, and formally commission tooling / fixtures / jigs / other to the shop.

5. Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA): Seek DFMA opportunity, assisting design engineering and/or supply chain to increase value through applicable changes. Be knowledgeable and make recommendations: (a) reduce part quantities, (b) avoid manufacturing adjustments/set-ups, (c) make parts self-aligning/locating, (d) make access easy to assemble, (e) reduce needs for reorientation/re-positioning, (f) poke-yoke parts orientation to eliminate misassemble, (g) make parts symmetrical / asymmetrical to the benefit of production, (h) eliminate process steps where possible, or other.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is highly prefered
  • 5 years of equipment manufacturing experience, specifically with welding, cutting, and CNC equipment. Experience in manufacturing and other combinations of work and experiences will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to express manufacturing concepts conversationally in meetings, face to face, over the phone and in email.
  • Ability to work with people on a manufacturing floor in a productive and at all organizational levels within the business.
  • Can plan and manage projects with manufacturing engineers, other internal departments, manufacturing sites, and suppliers to meet deadlines.
