Context & Environment- Must develop a working relationship with the business unit managers and leaders on a regular basis regarding the tax implications for various transactions.
- Develop close working relationships with the other functions within the tax department (compliance, financial reporting and indirect) and consult with the affiliates
- Serve as tax business partner for affiliates across TotalEnergies multi-energy portfolio (E&P, refining, Integrated Power, and Trading), acting either in a lead or in a supporting capacity, based on the needs of the tax planning department.
- Provide tax support to the rapidly growing Integrated Power business, including renewable energy, gas-fired power generation assets, and the trading of gas and electricity.
- Lead and support tax planning initiatives that align with business objectives and drive value creation across the organization.
- Accountable for leading assigned tax planning, tax research, and M&A-related projects for TotalEnergies US entities.
- Support the Head of Tax Planning in developing and implementing strategies to optimize the Company's tax position and enhance value creation, with a focus on effective tax rate management, cash tax optimization, and tax attribute utilization.
- Collaborate with Paris Headquarters and other global stakeholders on significant tax matters, providing analysis, recommendations, and support as needed.
ActivitiesThis position is primarily responsible for the following: - High level decision making regarding tax research, planning, and modeling of tax implications with respect to internal reorganizations, acquisitions, tax equity structures, and dispositions.
- Evaluate and recommend structures/alternatives for proposed transactions (mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, inter-company transfers, etc.).
- High level decision making regarding research projects and developing and supporting tax positions on issues and planning ideas.
- Renewable energy experience on all aspects of development and financing of wind, solar, storage and other renewable energy projects strongly preferred. This includes experience across the lifecycle of renewable energy projects, including pre-construction securing of credits, BOC strategy, PWA, Domestic Content, IRA and OBBB impact, tax equity structures, tax credit sales, registration process, etc.
- Partnership tax experience preferred
- Provide tax technical leadership by keeping abreast of changes in the federal tax laws.
- Ensure development of appropriate documentation of positions to support tax positions.
- Formulating and presenting tax advice to upper management regarding IRS audit issues and proposed transactions involving US legal structures and investments.
- Identifying cost saving opportunities in terms of tax optimization or process improvements.
- Participating in staff development and knowledge transfer.
- Ensure appropriate hand-off of planning activities to the compliance group. Have a keen understanding of the financial statement impact and tax return reporting of transactions and planning positions.
- Involve and work closely with indirect tax group, as necessary, on planning and transactions.
- Participate in departmental initiatives and activities for the benefit of the tax department
- Requires an ability to lead a project to completion - and be fully accountable for the entire life cycle of any project or transaction that is assigned.
- Experience with and understanding financial reporting impact of tax positions and ability to understand financial, deal and tax models is desired.
- Ability to juggle and prioritize several projects with multiple deadlines and very short turnaround.
- Assisting in coordinating with external tax advisors and service providers to deliver needed services.
- Comfortable working in a complex, fast-paced and unstructured environment
- Self-starter and ability to show initiative and ownership
- Willingness to be a team player and work in a collaborative manner within planning and with the rest of the tax department.
Candidate ProfileQualifications / Experience required- JD/LLM or Masters of Taxation preferred, 10+ years of US corporate tax experience with an in-house tax department of a major corporation, CPA firm (Big 4 preferred), large law firm or a combination thereof.
- Project management skills required.
- Ability to manage multiple competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to communicate to executive level is critical
