As the Manager of Bed Placement and Transfers, you will lead a team that helps ensure patients receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time. While not at the bedside, your work will directly impact every patient journey by improving patient flow, reducing delays, enhancing service, and creating a more seamless care experience. This is an opportunity to lead people, improve processes, and drive meaningful change at the center of hospital operations.

This leader is responsible for developing a high-performing team, evaluating and improving bed placement and transfer processes, and establishing standards that promote consistency, efficiency, and service excellence. Success in this role requires strong leadership, sound operational judgment, and the ability to understand how decisions in one area of the hospital affect patient flow throughout the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the daily operations of bed placement and transfer facilitation.
  • Lead the Patient Flow Specialist team, including oversight of their day-to-day activity and decisions, recruitment and retention, professional development, training, ongoing education, performance monitoring and feedback, and quality improvement.
  • Responsible for staffing and scheduling of Patient Flow Specialists.
  • Monitor real-time data on bed availability, patient census, and resource allocation to identify and address bottlenecks in patient flow.
  • Represent the bed placement and transfer function in meetings, huddles, presentations, and other external communications.
  • Responsible for daily bed meeting.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and workflows to streamline the bed placement and transfer process.
  • Collaborate with hospital leadership, emergency management, and community partners to coordinate patient transfers and placements during surge events or emergencies.
  • Analyze data and metrics to identify trends, forecast demand, and make data-driven decisions to optimize bed management.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication channels with hospital departments, external facilities, and community partners to facilitate timely patient placements and transfers.
  • Implement continuous quality improvement initiatives to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of bed placement and transfer process.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry best practices, regulatory changes, and technological advancements in transfers, bed management and patient flow optimization.
