The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability, performance, and maintainability of equipment and systems within an injection molding manufacturing facility. This position provides engineering support to the Maintenance by identifying chronic equipment issues, developing corrective actions, improving preventive and predictive maintenance programs, and leading projects that increase equipment uptime, safety, quality, and operating efficiency.
The Maintenance Engineer serves as a technical resource for injection molding equipment, recycling equipment, automation, robotics, auxiliary equipment, utilities, electrical systems, and facility infrastructure. The role works closely with Maintenance, Production, Tooling, Engineering, Quality, and Operations leadership to resolve equipment issues and develop sustainable solutions
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Analyze equipment failures, downtime, and recurring maintenance issues to identify root causes and eliminate chronic problems.
- Provide engineering support for injection molding machines, robots, automation, conveyors, thermolators, chillers, dryers, material handling systems, compressors, and other auxiliary equipment.
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action activities for significant or recurring equipment failures.
- Develop and implement solutions that improve equipment reliability, availability, and maintainability.
- Identify equipment failure trends and develop improvement plans based on maintenance and downtime data.
- Develop, improve, and sustain preventive maintenance (PM) programs for production and facility equipment.
- Evaluate PM frequencies and tasks based on equipment history, manufacturer recommendations, failure patterns, and operating conditions.
- Identify opportunities to implement predictive maintenance technologies such as vibration analysis, thermal imaging, oil analysis, ultrasonic inspection, or other condition-monitoring methods.
- Review PM effectiveness and eliminate unnecessary or ineffective maintenance activities.
- Establish equipment standards and maintenance requirements for critical assets.
- Develop a strong understanding of injection molding processes and the interaction between machines, molds, robots, and auxiliary equipment.
- Support troubleshooting of molding machine controls, hydraulics, electrical systems, temperature control, screw recovery, injection systems, and associated equipment.
- Support equipment setup, commissioning, and optimization.
Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement- Compile and analyze maintenance, downtime, failure, and equipment performance data.
- Identify opportunities to reduce unplanned downtime, maintenance cost, and repeat failures.
- Develop dashboards, reports, and key performance indicators for equipment reliability.
- Use data to prioritize maintenance improvement opportunities based on business impact.
- Lead continuous improvement projects focused on equipment reliability, efficiency, cost reduction, and process stability.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing and problem-solving methodologies, including 5S, root cause analysis, Pareto analysis, and structured corrective action.
Capital Projects & Equipment Implementation- Provide engineering support for new equipment purchases, replacements, upgrades, and capital projects.
- Develop equipment specifications and participate in equipment/vendor selection.
- Support installation, commissioning, startup, and qualification of new equipment.
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, electricians, technicians, and internal stakeholders during equipment projects.
- Ensure new equipment is properly documented and incorporated into the maintenance program.
- Identify opportunities to improve existing equipment through automation, controls upgrades, energy reduction, or design modifications.
Maintenance Systems & Documentation- Support the development and improvement of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
- Ensure equipment records, PM procedures, bills of materials, manuals, and technical documentation are accurate and maintained.
- Develop troubleshooting guides, standard work, maintenance procedures, and equipment standards.
- Identify critical spare parts and support development of appropriate inventory levels.
- Establish equipment criticality rankings and maintenance priorities.
Safety & Compliance- Ensure maintenance engineering activities support a safe working environment.
- Incorporate machine guarding, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, and other applicable safety requirements into equipment improvements.
- Support investigations of equipment-related safety incidents and corrective actions.
- Ensure engineering modifications comply with applicable codes, standards, and company requirements.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting knowledge.
- Demonstrated experience with root cause analysis and equipment reliability improvement.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, equipment manuals, and technical documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and data analysis.
- Strong communication and project management skills.
- Ability to work effectively with technicians, operators, engineers, vendors, and management.
