Job Summary
The Remote COBOL Developer will provide mainframe development and production support for critical HR, Payroll, and Employee Travel applications during a modernization initiative, including the transition from Oracle PeopleSoft to Workday. The role focuses on maintaining and enhancing COBOL and JCL programs, monitoring batch processing, troubleshooting interfaces and data transmissions, and resolving production incidents. The developer will serve as a technical subject matter expert, collaborating with business analysts and technical teams to maintain application stability, support integrations, and contribute to testing and deployment activities. The position is remote, with the location specified as Chicago, Illinois, and may require occasional off-hours support for production incidents and critical releases.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide day-to-day production support for mainframe-based HR, Payroll, and Employee Travel applications.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve COBOL batch processing, transmission, and interface-related issues, identifying root causes.
• Support critical data transmissions and integrations between legacy systems, Oracle PeopleSoft, Workday, and downstream applications.
• Analyze production incidents and serve as the primary technical subject matter expert for issue triage and remediation.
• Maintain and enhance COBOL and JCL programs supporting business processes.
• Collaborate with business analysts and technical teams to develop and implement technical solutions.
• Support testing activities, defect resolution, and deployment efforts related to modernization initiatives.
• Use mainframe tools such as Control-M, SPUFI, and File Manager to support application operations and troubleshooting.
• Support batch processing, job scheduling, and interface workflows to maintain application reliability.
• Provide occasional off-hours support for production incidents and critical releases.
Required Qualifications
• Ten or more years of mainframe development and production support experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, and DB2.
• Experience supporting batch processing, job scheduling, and interface workflows.
• Proficiency with mainframe tools such as Control-M, SPUFI, and File Manager.
• Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience supporting HR, Payroll, Benefits, or Workforce Management systems.
• Knowledge of Oracle PeopleSoft Human Capital Management (HCM) and Workday integrations.
• Experience supporting large-scale modernization or migration programs.
• Experience supporting airline, travel, or large enterprise workforce systems.
