Litigation Legal Assistant
Position Summary:
This firm has an excellent opportunity for an experienced Legal Assistant with demonstrated litigation, technical and administrative skills to work in their Los Angeles office. The selected individual will support attorneys in the Litigation practice group by maintaining and processing case information, electronically filing documents in federal and state court, managing the progression of cases to final disposition, creating electronic files, preparing and processing correspondence, memoranda and complex legal documents, and performing other administrative functions.
Office hours are 8:30AM - 5PM; however, staff schedules may vary. During busy times, the job may require more than 40 hours per week to perform the duties of the position, and on occasion, irregular hours may be required. Overtime pay is provided.
Duties & Responsibilities:
3 Prepares documents for state and federal court filings including discovery requests and responses, letters, pleadings, motions and other documents, as well as e-filing in various federal, state, and appellate courts.
3 Prepares correspondence, memoranda, and other legal documents from written and oral drafts; drafts standard correspondence and other documents required by the litigation process; understands specialty areas of practice (Employment Litigation) and can attach appropriate enclosures for specialty area without the need for supervision.
3 Formats and proofreads documents to ensure compliance with court rules and grammatical standards.
3 Establishes and maintains calendar and deadline reminder systems; utilizes master calendar system and ensures attorneys' compliance and awareness of upcoming deadlines.
3 Opens new files and maintains client and general files. Conducts periodic review for possible storage of closed files; prepares files for electronic storage.
3 May receive clients and visitors; maintains good public relations with clients; observes confidentiality of attorney-client relationship.
3 Makes client and client-related appointments and travel arrangements for attorneys upon request.
3 May enter attorney time for time and billing purposes on a daily basis.
3 Works in a cooperative and fast-paced team environment to ensure all daily tasks such as typing, filing, photocopying, telephone coverage, submission and tracking of attorney expenses, and other administrative duties are covered.
3 Responds to messages and requests in a timely manner (at least within the same business day), ensuring that the highest level of cooperation and teamwork is exhibited.
Skills & Qualifications:
3 Minimum of 5 years of prior civil litigation law firm experience necessary to gain an understanding of law office policies and procedures and produce accurate legal documents with minimal supervision. Labor and Employment experience is a plus.
3 Ability to transcribe legal documents, correspondence and reports from rough draft or, on rare occasions, dictation at a minimum of 70 wpm.
3 Ability to proofread and edit (punctuation, grammar, spelling) law office correspondence and legal matters. Perform basic arithmetic when verifying calculations on forms and documents; maintain records and filing systems at the firm's designated level.
3 Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints with minimal supervision.
3 Demonstrates high level of attention to detail.
3 Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel or similar software programs.
3 Demonstrated knowledge and in-depth experience with various court systems and procedures, including CM/ECF filing.
3 Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate fully, effectively and appropriately by telephone, in person and via email with a wide range of clients, attorneys and staff, consistently providing customer satisfaction with each interaction.
Position Details:
3 Position: Non-exempt.
3 Location: Los Angeles. In office 3 days per week.
3 Salary: $80,000 - $107,000.
