Lead Steel Designer

Saber Power Services seeks an experienced Lead Steel Designer to lead the design and detailing of structural steel systems for substations, transmission and distribution (T&D) lines, switchyards, and foundation systems. This position will provide technical leadership to the steel design team while working closely with engineers, project managers, and multi-disciplinary design groups to deliver high-quality engineering design packages that meet client requirements, industry standards, and project schedules.

The ideal candidate is a highly skilled structural steel designer with extensive experience in utility and power infrastructure projects, strong AutoCAD proficiency, and demonstrated leadership in coordinating design teams and mentoring junior designers.

This position will be based in Alexandria, LA.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the design and detailing of structural steel components for substations, switchyards, transmission structures, and related utility infrastructure.
  • Create, review, and approve fabrication drawings, erection drawings, steel shop drawings, connection details, and bills of materials using AutoCAD.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality control for steel design deliverables to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Interpret structural engineering calculations, markups, sketches, and redlines and incorporate them into final design packages.
  • Coordinate closely with structural, civil, and electrical engineering teams to ensure alignment across multidisciplinary projects.
  • Mentor, train, and provide technical guidance to Steel Designers and CAD personnel.
  • Establish design standards, best practices, and drafting procedures to improve consistency and efficiency.
  • Review project schedules and prioritize design activities to support engineering and construction milestones.
  • Identify opportunities to improve constructability, standardization, and design efficiency.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable industry codes, client specifications, and company quality standards, including AISC, NESC, and applicable utility requirements.
  • Support project managers with estimating, planning, workload forecasting, and resource coordination as needed.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and internal coordination meetings.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, drawing files, and revision history.
  • Support construction, fabrication, and field personnel by responding to Requests for Information (RFIs) and resolving design issues.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.

Qualifications:

  • Experience designing structural steel for substations, switchyards, and transmission and distribution facilities.

  • Strong knowledge of structural steel detailing, fabrication, and erection practices.

  • Experience reviewing and checking engineering drawings for quality and accuracy.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, structural calculations, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and meeting project deadlines.
