The
Lead Field Engineer - Transmission Lines, will provide field engineering support for the Transmission Construction projects, with a primary focus on steel transmission line construction. Working directly with construction teams, contractors, project managers, utility clients, quality assurance and multidisciplinary engineering teams, this role will provide technical engineering reviews, site supervision, and timely field decisions to support safe, quality, and efficient construction. The successful candidate will be a decisive and collaborative Professional Engineer with strong transmission line and foundation knowledge, capable of evaluating changing field conditions, resolving technical issues, and making sound engineering decisions in active construction environments. This is a field-based position requiring frequent travel to remote construction sites throughout British Columbia and work in variable terrain and weather conditions.
Primary Responsibilities
- Providing field engineering support during transmission line construction, including foundations, civil works, steel tower assembly and erection, conductor and OPGW stringing, grounding, insulators, hardware and associated line components;
- Reviewing field conditions, construction issues, drawings, specifications and design requirements and making timely engineering decisions to maintain safe and efficient progress of the work;
- Acting as a key technical interface between the field, the design team, project management, contractors and the utility client to resolve on-site engineering issues;
- Responding to RFIs and technical queries promptly, coordinating with discipline leads where required, and providing clear direction to construction teams;
- Reviewing and providing engineering input to field design changes, construction solutions and proposed deviations where they affect design intent, permanent works or engineering integrity;
- Reviewing and signing off on Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), witnessing and releasing engineering hold points, and confirming that required inspections and technical acceptance criteria have been satisfied;
- Monitoring construction quality and conformance with approved drawings, specifications, standards and project requirements, and identifying deficiencies or non-conforming work requiring corrective action;
- Providing technical guidance to field crews and contractors on transmission line construction matters while maintaining clear distinction between engineering requirements and the contractor's responsibility for construction means, methods and site safety;
- Participating in daily construction meetings, look-ahead planning, sequencing and constructability discussions to proactively identify and resolve engineering constraints;
- Monitoring construction progress from an engineering perspective and identifying technical issues, decisions or information gaps that may affect schedule, productivity, quality or safety;
- Collaborating with civil, structural and electrical engineering teams on foundation, tower, line hardware, access and other multidisciplinary field issues;
- Evaluating unexpected site conditions including terrain, geotechnical conditions, weather-related impacts and structural or constructability constraints, and developing practical engineering solutions;
- Supporting technical review of construction methodologies and temporary requirements where they may affect the permanent design assumptions or engineering integrity;
- Exercising professional judgment and independent decision-making within approved design criteria, and escalating issues where required based on technical risk, scope, or authority.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant engineering experience, preferably including significant transmission line construction and field engineering experience;
- University Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural or Electrical Engineering; Civil or Structural Engineering is preferred;
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or eligible for immediate registration;
- Demonstrated transmission line design and/or foundation engineering experience is required;
- Previous field engineering, construction support, or site supervision experience on transmission line projects is strongly preferred;
- Experience with steel transmission tower foundations, assembly, erection, conductor and OPGW stringing, insulators, hardware accessories and fittings;
- Strong understanding of civil and foundation construction, including excavation, concrete, anchors, geotechnical conditions, drainage, access, and constructability considerations;
- Familiarity with transmission line industry standards and guidelines including applicable CSA requirements and relevant NESC, IEC, IEEE, ASCE and CIGRE standards and practices;
- Strong professional judgment with the ability to assess incomplete or changing field information, make timely decisions and communicate clear engineering direction;
- Demonstrated ability to identify non-conforming work, evaluate technical risk, determine appropriate corrective action, and make decisions at inspection hold points;
- Sound understanding of project management systems and the relationship between engineering decisions, construction sequencing, schedule, quality, and project risk;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary field crews, contractors, project teams, and utility clients;
- Self-motivated and collaborative, with the ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities and remain effective in a fast-paced construction environment;
- Valid Canadian Driver's License and willingness to travel frequently and work at remote or active construction sites throughout British Columbia;
- Ability and willingness to work in remote terrain, variable weather conditions, and active construction environments.
- Integrity, team spirit, and a commitment to excellence
