Position OverviewPower your future with Qualus in our Engineering department as a Lead Engineer - Electrical. The Lead Engineer role is responsible for delivering medium and low voltage electrical design solutions for outdoor and unit substations, power transformers, protection and control schemes, and related EPC projects in both brownfield and greenfield environments. This position develops equipment specifications, reviews field data, and performs system studies including coordination, short circuit, and arc flash analysis. The Lead Engineer collaborates with CAD staff to produce and update electrical drawings, and provides technical recommendations based on power monitoring data. Acting as a Qualus representative, this role supports sales during customer site walks and leads cross-functional interactions to ensure optimal project outcomes. Additional responsibilities include resource planning, project kickoff participation, adherence to safety standards, accurate documentation for invoicing, and coordination with suppliers to meet material and equipment requirements.
Responsibilities
- Medium and low voltage electrical design consisting of, but not limited to: Outdoor substations, unit substations, power transformers, protection and control schemes, power monitoring, circuit breaker replacements, relay replacements, brownfield and greenfield EPC projects.
- Specification development for medium and low voltage electrical equipment.
- Works with CAD staff to develop and/or update client electrical drawings including one lines, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
- Reviews field data and performs coordination, short circuit, and arc flash studies.
- Review power monitoring data to provide customer recommendations.
- Act as a representative of Qualus to support sales in customer site walks.
- Leads interaction with other functions and locations to determine optimum solutions.
- Remains current on all safety and technical training.
- Adheres to all company, industry and client safety protocols and standards.
- Assesses project specific resource needs and coordinates assignments with project manager.
- Communicates core technical job requirements.
- Supports immediate supervisor on planning and organizing workload to ensure the most effective return on assets.
- Coordinates proper project hand-off between sales and operations/engineering.
- Participates in project kickoff meetings to discuss work scope, project specifications, budgets, schedules, and safety requirements with project team.
- Effectively communicates with other departments to assure activities are properly coordinated.
- Ensures timely and accurate invoicing for all engineering projects by providing all paperwork in a like manner; these include Service Acknowledgement Forms (SAFs), weekly time keeping, documentation of change orders, test reports, and other documents as required by the project deliverables.
- Consults and coordinates as necessary to utilize suppliers with the capabilities to meet material and equipment needs.
- Up to 30% travel may be required for training and visiting customer job sites.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in electrical engineering or related from an ABET accredited institution, preferred with a focus on power systems.
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) License required.
- 10+ years of design engineering experience on primary power distribution, P&C schemes, and/or electrical equipment.
- Experience developing relay protective setpoints and settings files.
- Working knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, ANSI C57, ANSI C37, and NESC, and other applicable codes and standards in the design of substations and industrial power distribution.
- 5+ years of AutoCAD experience.
- 5+ years using power systems modeling software such as ETAP, SKM, and/or EasyPower.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss technical recommendations with customers.
- Ability to work independently, accurately, and with a high attention to detail.
