Full Job Description
The Job

Our team at Atticus has built the largest Social Security Disability practice in the country, representing thousands of claimants every month. The secret to scaling this practice: pairing best-in-class lawyering with built-from-scratch software and operations, creating a new type of legal practice from the ground-up.

We're now embarking on the same journey in personal injury, and we're hiring a founding attorney to build out this practice. You'll own our legal operations from end to end: selecting which cases we take on, setting case strategy, and representing clients from intake through resolution. You'll manage a team of attorney and non-attorney professionals across intake and case management. You'll report to and partner with our General Manager, Peter Bailinson, and together you'll work closely with our CEO and Managing Attorney, Sam Byker.

On any given week, you may:
  • Directly represent severely injured clients in pre-litigation negotiation, mediation, or trial.
  • Partner with our marketing team to workshop our client-facing brand and how to differentiate ourselves from traditional incumbents.
  • Work with our product team to set the standards for after-hours phone support, determining the proper protocols and how to handle high-value cases.

This is a fundamentally different approach to practicing law. While some aspects of this job will look like work at a traditional law firm, you'll also be building alongside software engineers, product managers, and operators whose full-time job is to grow your practice. You'll also have the resources and the runway to meaningfully invest in the firm.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned attorney with years of personal injury experience who knows exactly how a plaintiff's firm operates, understands how to improve it, and wants a well-capitalized shot at doing so.
Qualifications

Required:
  • You have deep personal injury experience at a plaintiff's firm, ideally across motor vehicle accidents and premises liability.
  • You've represented clients through every stage of a case, and you've taken cases to trial.
  • You know the nuts and bolts of legal operations at a plaintiff's firm, including where the standard playbook falls short. You have specific views on how you'd do it better starting from a blank page.
  • You've supervised non-attorney professionals across intake, case management, and support.
  • You're a resourceful team player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will learn quickly and get your hands dirty.
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.
  • And finally, you're based in California and are licensed to practice law here.

Bonus / Nice-to-Have:
  • You have a network of injury attorneys you can call on for referrals, co-counsel relationships, and general advice.
  • You've been close to the marketing operations of a plaintiff's firm and understand how marketing and intake economics work.
  • You bring existing relationships or referral channels that could generate cases.
  • You've thought deeply about starting your own legal practice, or have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.

We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you're from a background that's underrepresented in tech, we'd love to meet you.
Salary and Benefits

This is a rare opportunity to join a startup that has strong traction (substantial funding, well-respected backers, tremendous growth, and many happy customers) but is still small enough that you can have a huge impact and play a role in shaping our success.

We're a certified B Corporation tackling a critical social problem. Our mission to help people in need drives everything we do, and your work here will touch many lives.

We offer competitive pay - including equity - and generous benefits:
  • Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employees and their families premiums covered
  • 15 vacation days & ~20 paid holidays each year (including two weeks at end-of-year)
  • Free membership to OneMedical
  • $600/year internet stipend
  • $1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
  • Up to $1,200/year student loan repayment assistance
  • 401(k) and optional HSA/FSA
  • Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues

We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $170,000 and $230,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate's experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.
Location

This role is based in California - you'll be licensed here and building our first injury practice in this market. Day to day, we're remote and committed to empowering everyone with flexibility, with travel to LA (on the company dime) to be with colleagues, plus offsites. We care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.
