The Laboratory Supervisor Surgical Pathology oversees and manages daily laboratory operations to ensure the highest quality of patient care while meeting regulatory and compliance standards. Supervisory oversight includes laboratory staff performance, interactions, and quality of work. Clinical management includes maintaining proper equipment operation, new test implementation, troubleshooting and resolving laboratory issues, correcting errors, and documenting quality control, resulting in efficient, timely and highest quality IHC slide production.
Essential Functions:
• Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Laboratory in accordance with departmental goals and objectives. Conduct basic data analysis to monitor the lab operation and performance
• Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies requirements
• Review quality control data as required. Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for IHC processes
• Ensure compliance with institutional and departmental safety policies and procedures
• Manage human resources: recruit, discipline, orient and train new staff members. Evaluate staff for competency and performance. Schedule and assign staff as needed
• Investigate and follow up on issues, problems and complaints as brought up by lab staff, management and clinical staff
• Material management to ensure that reagent and supplies are acquired and in stock as needed.
• Maintain daily communication with leadership regarding pending workload, staff performance and conduct, operational concerns and evening shift updates
• Provide operational support as needed to address workflow gaps, including embedding, microtomy, case distribution, slide scanning, and block filing maintenance
• Other duties as assigned by management
Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree required
• Surgical and / or Histology Laboratory processes work experience required
• NYS DOE Clinical Laboratory Technologist license is required.
• NSH Certified Histotechnologist - AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR CLINICAL PATHOLOGY (ASCP) required
• Specialized training, and hands-on laboratory experience in histology and/or immunohistochemistry
• understanding of:
• Histological techniques including fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining methodologies (H&E, special stains) Immunohistochemistry principles, assay optimization, troubleshooting, and validation.
• Laboratory quality assurance and quality control practices.
• Regulatory requirements, including NYSDOH (CLEP), CAP, and OSHA standards. Laboratory information systems (LIS) and specimen tracking workflows.
• Safety protocols related to chemical exposure, including formalin handling.
• The individual must demonstrate proficiency in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a wide range of laboratory instruments and systems, including but not limited to:
• Tissue processors, embedding centers, and microtomes. Cryostats and slide staining equipment.
• Automated immuno histochemistry platforms (e.g., Ventana, Leica, Dako). Cover slippers and slide land cassette labeling systems.
• Digital pathology systems, including slide scanners and image management software. Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and related data entry and tracking tools.
• Standard office and data processing equipment (computers, printers, reporting systems)
