Position Summary
Our Platform Engineering organization owns the container orchestration infrastructure that underpins Two Sigma's trading systems, services, and data pipelines. The team is responsible for the reliability, security, and evolution of our Kubernetes platform - both on-premise and in the cloud - at scale, partnering closely with trading technology, infrastructure, and data engineering teams across the firm.
We are looking for a Kubernetes Tech Lead to own the design, reliability, and evolution of our managed Kubernetes platform, which underpins our trading systems, services, and data pipelines. This is a hands-on technical leadership role that blends day-to-day operational ownership with long-term strategic direction, requiring deep Kubernetes expertise, strong software engineering fundamentals, and the ability to lead complex, cross-functional technical projects.
You'll be balancing two broad categories of work: adapting our Kubernetes platform to support novel use cases that drive business value, and investing in strategic platform improvements - including systematically reducing keep-the-lights-on (KTLO) costs - that allow us to safely continue operating at scale.
You will take on the following responsibilities: - Own the architecture, reliability, and long-term roadmap of our Kubernetes and container orchestration platform, both on-premise and in the cloud.
- Manage day-to-day operations, monitoring, and troubleshooting to ensure high availability and performance of our managed Kubernetes offerings.
- Lead complex, multi-system technical strategy that balances enabling novel, high-value use cases against strategic investments that reduce KTLO burden and keep the platform operating safely at scale.
- Design and build software components in Go, Java, and/or Python to extend and harden the platform.
- Drive decisions on Kubernetes internals and the broader cloud-native ecosystem as they affect trading systems, services, and data pipelines.
- Stay current on industry trends and translate them into pragmatic, effective solutions that balance industry standards with our unique business needs.
- Mentor engineers and help set technical direction and standards for the platform.
You should possess the following qualifications: - 6-8 years of overall experience in Kubernetes / container orchestration or related infrastructure engineering, including 2-3 years in a strategic technical lead role.
- BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Deep Kubernetes / container orchestration subject matter expertise (Kubernetes internals, cloud-native ecosystem), including proven experience managing both on-premise and cloud-based Kubernetes offerings.
- Cloud platform experience required (GCP preferred; familiarity with AWS or Azure also valuable).
- Software engineering proficiency, preferably in one or more of Go, Java, and Python.
- Software architecture / system design experience, with the ability to drive complex, multi-system technical strategy.
- GitOps / Infrastructure-as-Code experience (e.g., Argo CD, Terraform).
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrated ability to provide thought leadership and strategic direction while balancing long-term platform goals with immediate business needs.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
You will enjoy the following benefits:- Core Benefits: Fully paid medical and dental insurance premiums for employees and dependents, competitive 401k match, employer-paid life & disability insurance
- Perks: Onsite gyms with laundry service, wellness activities, casual dress, snacks, game rooms
- Learning: Tuition reimbursement, conference and training sponsorship
- Time Off: Generous vacation and unlimited sick days, competitive paid caregiver leaves
- Hybrid Work Policy: Flexible in-office days with budget for home office setup
The base pay for this role will be between $165,000 and $300,000. This role may also be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits, such as a discretionary bonus, health, dental and other wellness plans and 401(k) contributions. Discretionary bonus can be a significant portion of total compensation. Actual compensation for successful candidates will be carefully determined based on a number of factors, including their skills, qualifications and experience.
