JOB SUMMARY

The Junior Mechanical Engineer, HVAC supports the engineering and design of HVAC systems for residential new construction projects while providing day-to-day leadership for the design team. This position performs engineering and design work, coordinates departmental workflows, supervises assigned staff, and supports project delivery from initial design through construction. The role provides technical, operational, and supervisory support to ensure the efficient execution of engineering services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent must have the skills, ability, and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Directly oversee a team of four (4) CAD technicians and mechanical designers, distributing project workload based on department priorities and staff capacity.
  • Own and update the Job Book Tracker weekly; use it to set and communicate weekly priorities to the design team.
  • Monitor the CAD list, workload tracking document, and Project Book weekly email list to ensure new projects are captured and progressing on schedule.
  • Identify workload bottlenecks and reassign resources as needed to keep projects on track for build and installation dates.
  • Assist department leadership and senior engineering staff with project design reviews following the established New Project Engineering Review process, including Title 24 report review, architectural and mechanical drawing verification, equipment review (AHRI/HVI), and estimate reconciliation.
  • Assist with residential new construction designs, including plan review and coordination of mechanical layouts for new residential projects.
  • Prepare completed project reviews for the bluebook process, ensuring Title Sheets, equipment schedules, and labor reports are accurate and complete.
  • Draft and route HVAC RFIs to designers when plan or Title 24 discrepancies are identified, copying the Builder per department standards.
  • Serve as a second reviewer on project files to reduce the design review backlog.
  • Support the launch of the company's in-house Title 24 function, including training assigned team members in Title 24 report preparation and review.
  • Help establish workflows, standards, and quality checks for Title 24 work as the function matures.
  • Proactively pursue new project work through builder relationships in support of company revenue growth; serve as a point of contact for builders on active and prospective projects.
  • Own the shared engineering email account: triage incoming messages daily, assign priority, and delegate items to the appropriate team member for timely resolution.
  • Track outstanding email items to ensure the department is responsive to field and builder requests.
  • Review and approve daily timecards; track attendance, time off, and hours worked for all direct reports.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports and administer corrective action as needed, in coordination with Human Resources and department leadership.
  • Provide hands-on training and mentorship to CAD technicians and mechanical designers, including newer team members developing proficiency in the project review process.
  • Support structured onboarding of team members into the full New Project Engineering Review workflow, from job book preparation through design review and RFI management.
