Job Title: Instructor - Pain Services APP (APRN / AC)



Job Summary:

The Department of Anesthesiology, Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado has an opening for a full-time (1.0FTE) Certified Advanced Practice Provider to practice on the Pain Services Team at Children's Hospital Colorado. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary Pain Consultation Service at Children's Hospital Colorado, this position will provide comprehensive assessment and pain management for hospitalized children; outpatient assessment, diagnosis and treatment; telephone follow up and triage for patients at home; provide pain-related nursing education, and participate in pain-related research and evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:
• Promoting an environment of mutual respect among the interdisciplinary team, referring services, children, and familie
• Practicing holistically, considering patients' physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual need
• Obtaining a health history, performing a physical examination, and establishing a plan of care for pain related to the diagnosis.
• Ordering and adjusting medication and non-pharmacologic therapies.
• Ordering and evaluating diagnostic studies, including lab and x-ray Collaborating with Pain Service physician
• In collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, evaluating and managing a follow-up plan based on the patient's response
• Documenting in the medical record the chief complaint, history, physical findings, diagnosis, treatments, and progre
• Initiating requests for consultation to other healthcare provider
• Collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to maintain good communication among families, primary care providers, and other referral service
• Practicing in a fiscally responsible manner
• Collaborating in the development of pain-related procedure statements, protocols and patient/parent educational handout
• Assisting with problem identification and data collection for research and/or quality improvement project
• Independently seeking opportunities to expand own clinical knowledge and skills and achieve professional development goal
• Serving as a preceptor for Advanced Practice Provider student
• Participating in professional affiliations and networks with professional colleague
• Participating on department/division/hospital committees as needed/requested.

Additionally, this position may be cross trained to provide assessment and management of outpatient chronic pain patients and/or to provide assessment and management of patient in anesthesia pre-op clinic.

APP coverage is 7 days/week and includes holidays. Specifically, for hospitalized Acute Pain Service patients, the position will round on inpatients, advance the treatment plan, write necessary analgesia orders, and collaborate with the pain service attending physician and the primary service to achieve comfort goals.

Specifically, for outpatients of the clinic the position will independently see patients, including consults, follow-up visits, opioid refill/wean patients, new patients in multidisciplinary, pain rehabilitation clinic, medically complex clinic and other subspecialty clinics requiring an embedded pain management specialist. This position will also provide inpatient consults for patients with chronic pain and work collaboratively with other members of the pain service, medical and interprofessional team members. Additionally, this position will have the opportunity to credential for Intrathecal pump management and refills, trigger point and Botox injections.

Further, the individual will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team in developing and implementing pain-related policies and procedures. Pain-related research and process improvement opportunities will also be available.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

APRN
• Licensed as a Registered Nurse in Colorado
• Graduate preparation in nursing (e.g., MS, ND, DNP)
• Certified in Colorado or ability to be certified in Colorado as an advanced practice nurse for pediatric population (CNS, PNP, FNP)
• Prescriptive authority or currently eligible for prescriptive authority as an advanced practice nurse

OR

PA-C
• Certification as Physician's Assistant
• Experience managing pediatric patient

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in pediatric pain assessment and management
• At least 2-years' experience as an advanced practice pediatric provider

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with requesting physicians, anesthesia care team, surgical and medical services, patients, and their families.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Knowledge of organizational policies and procedures of University of Colorado Hospital as they relate to patient care service

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

$110,289 - $166,294

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
