About the Role The Superintendent, Surface, Utilities, and Infrastructure leads and oversees the planning, execution, and field delivery of all off-site and on-site civil and utilities infrastructure. This role provides direct field leadership and contractor management across site access roads, bulk earthworks, power transmission/distribution, water supply well fields and pipelines, raw/potable water storage, sewage treatment systems, drainage and diversion channels, and non-process buildings (ancillary facilities, warehousing, and administration complexes) to ensure construction progresses safely, on schedule, within authorized capital budgets, and in strict compliance with engineering specifications.
Key Responsibilities Safety & Environmental Stewardship- Demonstrate visible field safety leadership during heavy civil construction, earthworks, utility installations, and remote site operations.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate hazards associated with field operations, including working around heavy machinery, open excavations, trenching, high-voltage power lines, piping installations, and remote construction environments.
- Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist and ensure appropriate controls are implemented before work resumes.
- Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, toolbox talks, and site safety initiatives.
- Promptly report and document incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
- Ensure compliance with AngloGold Ashanti safety standards, environmental commitments, permitting requirements, regulatory frameworks (e.g., BLM, NDEP, MSHA, OSHA), and company values.
Infrastructure Construction Delivery- Direct the daily construction execution for all site infrastructure packages, including access/haul roads, earthworks pads, water pipelines, well fields, high-voltage power reticulation, substations, communication corridors, and ancillary facilities.
- Supervise civil, earthworks, and utilities for EPC/EPCM contractors; monitor daily contractor headcounts, equipment utilization, construction work fronts, and adherence to technical specifications.
- Oversee day-to-day management of remote site logistics, bulk earthmoving operations, piping installations, and power infrastructure.
- Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, process plant construction crews, environmental teams, mining operations, and utility providers (e.g., power companies, water authorities).
- Verify compliance with environmental commitments, land-access agreements, and permit requirements.
- Maintain accurate construction records and databases through disciplined data validation and documentation practices.
Schedule, Cost & Governance Execution- Partner with Project Controls to build, monitor, and recover Level 4 field construction schedules, tracking critical path activities and ensuring key milestone handover dates are achieved.
- Verify contractor daily work logs, field change sheets, progress claim measurements, and pay applications; manage field scope deviations via formal Management of Change (MOC) procedures.
- Apply current construction management techniques and industry best practices relevant to large-scale mining or industrial capital projects ($100M+).
- Ensure all civil earthworks, compaction, pipe laying, concrete pours, and structural installations strictly conform to approved engineering designs, QA/QC inspection and test plans (ITPs), and regulatory permit conditions.
Commissioning & Handover- Lead the pre-commissioning, functional testing, and orderly handover of completed infrastructure and utility systems to Operations and Maintenance teams.
- Document construction results and commissioning records in a timely, organized, and auditable manner.
- Support preparation of technical presentations, project updates, and reports for internal stakeholders, leadership, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with maintenance of construction databases, drawings, and records management systems.
Requirements- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or equivalent practical field leadership experience combined with technical certifications required.
- Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Construction Manager (CCM), OSHA 30, or MSHA certification preferred.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to operate 4WD vehicles.
- First Aid certification or willingness to obtain certification.
- Minimum of 8 to 12+ years of progressive construction management and field supervisory experience in heavy civil infrastructure, earthworks, and utilities, with a strong background in large-scale mining or industrial capital projects ($100M+).
- Proven track record leading multidisciplinary contractor workforces on greenfield or major brownfield mining developments.
- Comprehensive understanding of civil earthworks, geotechnical compaction standards, road construction, HDPE pipe welding/installation, water distribution systems, and power substation/transmission corridors.
- In-depth knowledge of construction contracting models (Lump Sum, Unit Price, Time & Materials, EPC/EPCM) and contractor claim management.
- Strong familiarity with regulatory and environmental compliance frameworks in mining jurisdictions (e.g., BLM, NDEP, MSHA, OSHA).
- Proficiency in interpreting complex civil/structural engineering drawings, piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), geotechnical reports, and 3D design models (Navisworks).
- Ability to work effectively in remote field environments and varying weather conditions.
- Ability to identify and assess risks associated with heavy civil construction and infrastructure activities.
- Medically fit to work in remote environments with limited support infrastructure.
- Strong commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and responsible construction practices.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to deliver clear daily progress updates to project management and collaborate with site teams.
- Strong analytical thinking and decisive field troubleshooting capability to address unexpected ground conditions, weather disruptions, or constructability clashes in real time.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage changing field requirements and subcontractor bottlenecks.
- Strong leadership ability to drive field productivity, enforce accountability, and foster a collaborative working environment with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders.
