OverviewABOUT THE POSITIONVHB is seeking a Project Manager/Industrial Hygienist to join our growing New Jersey Industrial Hygiene team. This individual will independently manage small- to mid-sized projects, develop and maintain client relationships, prepare proposals, lead technical investigations, and mentor junior staff while helping expand our Industrial Hygiene practice. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated seller-doer looking to take on a highly autonomous role with opportunities for technical leadership and business development.
The team is based in New Jersey and supports projects primarily throughout NJ, NY, and PA. This position may sit in any of our NJ offices, and will include occasional overnight travel to other VHB project locations as needed.
Responsibilities- Independently manage industrial hygiene projects from proposal through completion, including scope, schedule, budget, and client communication.
- Lead indoor environmental assessments and hazardous building materials investigations, including asbestos, mold, lead, PCBs, mercury, indoor air quality, and related services.
- Design and oversee remediation projects while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and industry standards.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external clients while supporting business development and practice growth.
- Prepare proposals, technical reports, cost estimates, and project documentation.
- Monitor evolving environmental regulations and industry trends and apply knowledge to client solutions and new opportunities.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff while coordinating field activities and project execution.
- Attend meetings with clients, regulatory agencies, architects, engineers, developers, and other project stakeholders.
- Oversee project performance, proactively identify risks, and resolve issues to deliver successful project outcomes.
- Coordinate project schedules and resources to ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.

- Strong understanding of indoor environmental consulting and hazardous building materials investigations.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
- Ability to work effectively in both field and office environments.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills; CADD experience is a plus.
- Self-motivated, highly organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Fundamental knowledge of buildings, building systems, construction, and environmental processes.
Required Qualifications- 8+ years of industrial hygiene or indoor environmental consulting experience, including project management responsibilities.
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Experience managing projects involving asbestos and other indoor environmental services, including mold, indoor air quality, lead, PCBs, or similar hazardous materials.
- AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector and Asbestos Project Designer certifications required.
- EPA and NJ Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor certification required. Experienced candidates with past certification may be considered.
- Strong report writing, proposal preparation, project coordination, and client management skills.
- Demonstrated experience building client relationships and supporting business development.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to travel as needed for project requirements. Overnight travel, typically within the Northeast/New England may be required.
Preferred Qualifications- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or actively working toward/eligible for.
- ACAC Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC), Certified Microbial Consultant (CMC), or other related industry certifications a plus.
- NYS DOL Asbestos Building Inspector and Asbestos Project Designer.
- NYC DEP Asbestos Investigator certification.
- NYS DOL Mold Assessor certification.
- SSPC (C3) Lead Supervisor/Competent Person for Commercial Buildings/Superstructures.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current annual refresher.
- Experience supporting projects outside of New Jersey and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in New Jersey is $100,000-120,000. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
