Amentum is seeking a Certified Industrial Hygienist to support operations at the DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, WV. This position will involve working closely with federal and contract, researchers, site technicians, engineers, and other ES&H professionals. This position reports to the R&D SARS Supervisor but will work in an interdisciplinary team environment. They are to ensure the federal safety review process is fully documented, and the final safety review package is carefully assembled and uploaded to the NETL tracking system for review and approval.
The successful candidate must have an undergraduate degree in environmental, health and safety, industrial hygiene or similar field. A master’s degree is preferred. A CIH certification is required. The candidate must be driven with good interpersonal and team building skills and be able to function independently with moderate supervision. Additionally, the candidate must have good written and excellent verbal
communications skills. They must be proficient with the suite of Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and Teams. The candidate must also have a thorough understanding of relevant regulations and standards such as OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and ACGIH.
Key responsibilities include:
- Conduct thorough assessments of R&D related work activities to identify potential health hazards associated with research activities.
- Implement and oversee exposure monitoring programs for various hazards, such as asbestos, lead analysis and surveys, radiation surveys, radiologic work permits and noise surveys, risk analysis, radiologic dosimetry, NORM surveys, occupational noise assessment, air quality, ventilation, heat stress monitoring, ergonomics surveys and others as requested.
- Develop, implement and maintain comprehensive industrial hygiene programs, such as chemical hygiene plans, respiratory protection programs, hearing conservation programs, and laser safety programs.
- Develop, perform and/or present a variety of safety and health training courses – examples would be HAZCOM, lab safety, PPE, respirator fit testing and protection, asbestos, lead, chemical specific training.
- Conduct evaluations of the physical, chemical and toxicological properties of chemical substances associated with R&D work activities.
- This position requires the ability to meet formal schedules, milestones, and budgetary requirements.
- The successful candidate will have experience reviewing and understanding lab-scale R&D projects for potential hazards, exposure pathways, and acceptable mitigations; familiarity reviewing engineering drawings such as plot plans, process flow diagrams (PFD), and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) for potential points of failure and assure conformance to applicable ES&H codes and standards; and the ability to understand complex ES&H issues.
- The position also leads and participates in annual safety and compliance assessments of R&D projects; schedules and chairs hazard identification and analyses meetings for on-site projects undergoing review; and prepares reports of hazard analyses for review and approval following NETL’s internal process. For new projects or those undergoing a major modification, works to the formal Project Management Plan process to include estimating work activities and reviewing project schedules.
Required Qualifications:
- US Citizen Required
- Bachelor's degree in an ES&H or ES&H-related field (e.g., safety, environmental science, engineering, chemistry, biology or other science-related fields).
- Minimum 5 years or relatable expereience.
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) with a working knowledge of Chemical Hygiene Plans (CHP) and compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard
- Additionally, the candidate must have strong written and verbal communication skills and be proficient in Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree
- Experience participating in formal hazard analysis reviews (HAR) using a “What-If” or other structured approaches in an R&D Laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated experience conducting formal causal analysis of incidents and off-normal occurrences in an R&D setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of process safety in a light industrial or laboratory setting.
- BCSP certification (ASP, CSP, or CIH).
- CIH with at least five (5) years of job-related experience in a laboratory environment with a strong working knowledge of Chemical Hygiene Plans (CHP) and compliance with the OSHA Laboratory Standard ().
Compensation Details:
$95,000+
