Full Job Description
The HVAC Manager is responsible for the management and leadership of the HVAC mechanics that support the main campus. This role involves implementing day-to-day policies, procedures, and programs to ensure well-managed and well-maintained buildings, whether directly supervised or managed by team members. The position emphasizes a positive response to staff and patient requirements, environmental health and safety, and quality programs. The HVAC Manager oversees HVAC services, financial performance, vendor management, and staffing to meet the needs of the buildings and staff.

  • Manage day-to-day operations of the HVAC department, including staffing, scheduling, work activities, and priority setting for a 24/7 on-site operation. Prepare and issue work orders, assign daily tasks to mechanics, and ensure timely completion of department objectives. Provide critical issue support, as needed, to maintain continuous facility operations.
  • Responsible for the performance, reliability, and environmental conditions of HVAC systems throughout the facility, including freezers, cold rooms, warm rooms, and other specialized spaces. Troubleshoot HVAC system issues and coordinate corrective actions to minimize downtime and maintain optimal operating conditions.
  • Work with Sr. Director of Engineering & Facilities Operations to develop departmental budgets and plan for future equipment replacements and upgrades.
  • Oversee all HVAC service contracts and vendor activities to ensure quality, safety, and compliance with organizational standards. Monitor contractor performance, coordinate external service work, and maintain accountability for scope, scheduling, and results.
  • Develop, revise, and implement preventative maintenance procedures to improve equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and Joint Commission compliance. Collaborate with the Sustainability and Energy Manager to support energy conservation initiatives, monitor building performance, and recommend operational changes that reduce energy use.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and environmental requirements, including EPA regulations related to CFC/HCFC ozone depletion. Serve as the department representative on indoor air quality matters and participate in key committees such as Animal Care, Maintenance Safety, Infection Control, Chemical Emergency Response, and other organizational groups related to HVAC quality and operations. Provide rotating 24-hour on-call support for Support Services as required.
  • Supervises staff. Hires, develops, and manages staff to achieve organizational goals. Sets clear expectations, delivers feedback, and monitors performance for quality, efficiency, and compliance with policies and procedures. Mentors staff, fosters career growth, and cultivates a positive and productive work environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of HVAC systems, including chillers, boilers, air handling units, controls, and associated equipment
  • Strong understanding of HVAC principles, mechanical systems, and building automation systems
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing complex HVAC systems
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, regulations, and best practices related to HVAC operations and safety
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot issues, provide technical solutions, and maintain strong client satisfaction
  • Working knowledge of estimating, building construction standards, reading construction documents, and applicable national, state, and local codes and regulations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, work order systems, and Adobe/Bluebeam
  • Knowledge of business and management principles, including planning, coordination, and resource allocation
  • Ability to evaluate costs and benefits and make sound decisions
  • Ability to maintain and operate mechanical systems in a hospital environment with minimal downtime, controlled costs, and adherence to commitments
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to understand, interpret, and follow established standards, procedures, specifications, and documentation
  • Self-starter with initiative and accountability in identifying and resolving problems


Minimum Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required
  • 5+ years of HVAC field experience, including experience as an HVAC mechanic or mechanical crew lead
  • Experience managing project timelines, budgets, and material procurement
  • Previous experience as a manager with direct reports
  • HVAC mechanic license
  • EPA Type I & II certification


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises 7 HVAC Mechanics

The hiring range is based on market pay structures, with individual salaries determined by factors such as business needs, market conditions, internal equity, and based on the candidate's relevant experience, skills and qualifications.

For union positions, the pay range is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

$110,700.00 - $123,500.00
