Join CDM Smith's Geotechnical Engineering Team in Nashville, TN

CDM Smith is seeking a Junior Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing Infrastructure Services Group in Nashville, Tennessee. This is an exciting opportunity to work alongside experienced geotechnical engineers on a wide range of impactful infrastructure projects throughout Tennessee and the Southeast. As a member of our Nashville-based team, you will contribute to the planning, investigation, analysis, and design of geotechnical solutions supporting transportation, water, environmental, municipal, and infrastructure resilience projects. You'll gain hands-on experience through both office and field assignments while building technical expertise and collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.

What You'll Do:

Under the guidance of experienced geotechnical professionals, you will:
  • Support geotechnical investigations, subsurface explorations, and field data collection activities.
  • Perform engineering analyses and contribute to the design of shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures, excavations, earth retention systems, dewatering systems, embankments, dams, levees, and geo-environmental projects.
  • Evaluate geotechnical data and soil and rock properties to support project recommendations and design development.
  • Assist with preparation of geotechnical reports, technical specifications, engineering calculations, and construction documents.
  • Review designs for compliance with applicable federal, state, and local requirements, as well as CDM Smith quality standards.
  • Participate in site visits, field observations, and construction-phase services to verify design assumptions and support project execution.
  • Utilize engineering software and geotechnical modeling tools to perform analyses and develop solutions.
  • Collaborate with transportation, water, environmental, structural, and construction professionals throughout Tennessee and across CDM Smith's Southeast operations.
  • Contribute to the development of technical papers, white papers, presentations, and knowledge-sharing initiatives within the firm's Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) program.
  • Support conference participation, professional organization involvement, and technical presentations that enhance both personal growth and the visibility of our geotechnical practice.

Skills & Abilities

Intermediate Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices. Knowledge of engineer principles of design. Expert Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.). Good written and verbal communications skills.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Geotechnical, Civil, Mining or Geologic Engineering or related discipline. 1 year of related experience. Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands. Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

CDM Smith is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate's salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.

All bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
