Senior Power Systems Engineer - EMT
Renewable Integration and Dynamic Modeling RMS/EMT
Position Summary
PSC is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to support renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and battery energy storage. The engineer will develop plant models, perform dynamic studies, investigate model performance, and prepare technical reports. Responsibilities include managing assigned work from initial data review through client comments and final delivery.
Responsibilities
• Develop detailed and aggregate plant models, including collector systems, transformers, reactive compensation, and interconnection facilities.
• Configure generic dynamic models and integrate OEM inverter and plant controller models using project data and equipment settings.
• Perform model quality tests, voltage and frequency ride-through studies, and assessments supporting PRC-029 evaluations.
• Compare positive-sequence and EMT simulation results, investigate differences, and document findings.
• Troubleshoot initialization, control response, current limits, protection operation, and fault recovery.
• Update models from IFC to as-built configurations using final drawings, settings, and OEM model packages.
• Prepare model documentation, study reports, and submission packages, and resolve review comments.
• Coordinate with clients, equipment vendors, and technical reviewers; track assigned deadlines and identify missing information early.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems.
• Five (5) to Eight (8) years of relevant experience, including renewable generation or battery storage modeling and dynamic studies.
• Large Load Modeling
• Strong working knowledge of PSS/E and/or PSLF, including model development, initialization, and troubleshooting.
• Practical experience with PSCAD and OEM inverter and plant controller models.
• Understanding of inverter controls, voltage and reactive power control, frequency response, current limits, and protection.
• Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, equipment data, control settings, and per-unit quantities.
• Python experience for simulation automation, data analysis, and plotting.
• Clear technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to manage assigned studies independently and work within a peer review process.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience across PSS/E, PSLF, and PSCAD.
• Experience with ERCOT
• ASPEN short-circuit modeling experience, including inverter fault-current representations.
• Experience with PRC-029 studies and regional model testing and submission requirements.
• Experience with RMS and EMT benchmarking, weak-grid studies, and battery charging and discharging operation.
• Experience integrating user-defined models and resolving software compatibility issues.
• Consulting experience involving concurrent projects, client reviews, and scope management.
• Professional engineering registration or eligibility is an asset.
