Summary Description: In cooperation with the Maryland State` Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, coordinates a day and 24-hour residential program designed to serve children and adolescents who are seriously emotionally disturbed (SED), ages 6 through 20, whose needs cannot be met in the typical MCPS instructional setting. Provides an intensive academic program at the elementary, middle school, and senior high level based on MCPS Program of Studies and each student^s Individualized Educational Program, a comprehensive vocational program, and therapeutic milieu to students who have severe emotional disabilities. Physical Demands: Ability to assist staff in physical restraints, as needed. Special Requirements: Evening/weekend meetings and activities may be necessary.
Knowledge Skills Abilities: Thorough knowledge of federal and state laws affecting special education in MCPS. Thorough knowledge of normal and abnormal child and adolescent development, theories and practices related to emotional disturbance, and psycho-educational/interdisciplinary approach to educating and treating students with severe emotional disabilities. Ability to develop and implement an educational program which stresses academic achievement, modification of inappropriate school and community behaviors, and growth socially and emotionally for each individual. Ability to work cooperatively with other agencies, staff from a variety of disciplines and professions, parents, and students.^ Excellent human relations, problem solving, decision making, and written and oral communication skills. Education Training Experience: Master^s degree from an accredited college or university with course work in the areas of child and adolescent behavior, special education, psychology, curriculum, administration and supervision. Doctor^s degree desirable. Considerable training and experience with students who are SED; successful experience in school administration and leadership. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.Certificate License:Meets Maryland certification requirements for principal and supervisor, or Administrator II, and special education or related field.
