We are seeking highly motivated
Mechanical Engineer with experience in Furnace Systems & Plant Equipment
to join our R&D team in Londonderry, NH.
Area: Londonderry - NH
Objective: EvoMaterials, a division of Outokumpu Stainless, has recently established a pilot plant to develop the proprietary selective sulfidation technology. Construction is finalizing and commissioning beginning with plans to be fully operational by Q1 2027. We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, modification, and integration of high-temperature furnace systems and associated plant equipment moving forward. We are establishing internal design talent that can work alongside our process engineers to advance the technology.
This role combines hands-on mechanical design with responsibility for furnace, auxiliary equipment, and facility modification. The engineer will own mechanical design changes ranging from casting molds and material-handling carts to major furnace modifications and exhaust system redesigns. The ideal candidate brings exceptional CAD skills, sound engineering judgment, and experience evaluating equipment and materials for demanding high-temperature, sulfur-bearing environments.
Required Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- 10+ years of experience in equipment design, preferably in the metallurgical industry.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, and Navisworks.
- Understanding of materials compatibility in sulfur-bearing atmospheres above 1,000°C (1,832°F).
- Familiarity with piping and plumbing requirements, PIP practices, ASME standards, NFPA standards, and other relevant design regulations.
- Ability to translate operating and maintenance needs into practical, fabricable engineering designs.
- Strong technical documentation, cross-functional communication, and project ownership skills.
Preferred Qualifications:- A PE license in NH or the ability to obtain one.
- Experience using Revit for equipment layout, plant modeling, and multidisciplinary coordination.
- Experience designing melting furnace systems and associated equipment.
- Experience supporting fabrication, field installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of industrial equipment.
- Experience with formal engineering change control, management of change, and as-built documentation.
- Experience conducting equipment failure investigations and implementing corrective design changes.
Key ResponsibilitiesFurnace, Equipment, and Facility Design
- Design, evaluate, and modify furnace components, feeding systems, casting molds, carts, and other process and material-handling equipment.
- Own equipment design changes from initial concept through detailed design, fabrication support, installation, commissioning, and final documentation.
- Develop and review engineering calculations, fabrication drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and installation requirements.
- Coordinate with operations, maintenance, electrical, controls, process engineering, and fabrication teams to develop safe, reliable, and maintainable equipment.
- Use Revit, where applicable, to support integrated plant modeling and layout coordination.
- Use AutoCAD and Navisworks to develop, review, and coordinate equipment arrangements, interfaces, clearances, and potential clashes.
High-Temperature Systems and Materials- Evaluate material compatibility and expected service performance in sulfur-bearing atmospheres above 1,000°C (1,832°F).
- Account for thermal expansion, temperature gradients, corrosion, mechanical loading, and other service conditions when selecting materials and developing designs.
- Investigate equipment failures and recommend design improvements that increase reliability, maintainability, and service life.
Codes, Standards, and Engineering Documentation
- Maintain familiarity with applicable Process Industry Practices (PIP), ASME standards, NFPA standards, and other governing codes, regulations, and company requirements.
- Prepare and maintain design calculations, equipment specifications, drawing revisions, material specifications, and supporting compliance documentation.
- Lead the mechanical engineering portion of design reviews and management-of-change activities.
- Maintain traceable records of design decisions, approvals, field changes, and as-built conditions.
What Success Looks Like:
- Furnace and equipment modifications are safe, practical, maintainable, and supported by complete engineering documentation.
- Equipment layouts accurately reflect plant conditions and provide appropriate operating and maintenance access.
- Designs address the intended temperatures, atmospheres, and mechanical service conditions.
- Piping, plumbing, and equipment changes are reviewed against applicable requirements and documented for compliance.
- Engineering changes move efficiently from concept to installation, with clear coordination among operations, maintenance, engineering, and fabrication teams.
