Full Job Description
Role & Team

As a Forward Deployed Engineer - Migration (FDE), you'll work closely with customers and internal teams to plan and execute data migrations onto the gaiia platform - from initial discovery through to validated data in production. You combine customer-facing solutioning with hands-on technical execution, owning the migration end-to-end.

What You're Going to Do

Migration Discovery & Solutioning:

  • Conduct discovery sessions to understand customers' legacy environments - source systems, data models, and OSS/BSS layers.
  • Assess and design the migration approach, documenting scope, data mappings, constraints, and cutover strategy.
  • Help customers and internal stakeholders understand trade-offs and priorities - what's in scope, how far back to migrate history, and how data will be reconciled.

Technical Execution:

  • Explore unfamiliar source systems and extract data via SQL, APIs, manual exports, and backups.
  • Transform data into gaiia's standard format using declarative mapping files, then load, validate against target schemas, reconcile, and import.
  • Plan and run cutover: delta migrations, downtime considerations, and rollback - monitoring production data and resolving discrepancies after go-live.

Delivery Leadership:

  • Own the migration relationship end-to-end - discovery, solutioning, execution, and post-cutover stabilization.
  • Build repeatable processes and reusable assets - templates, mapping rules, playbooks - to make future migrations faster.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for internal teams needing context on customer data and migration considerations.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to influence the migration tooling roadmap, and contribute engineering improvements yourself.

Must-haves

  • Experience (4-6+ years) spanning both customer-facing implementation/solutioning AND hands-on data or software engineering.
  • Strong SQL and TypeScript/JavaScript (Node) - fluent querying, reshaping, and debugging data in unfamiliar source schemas.
  • Strong command of ETL fundamentals - you treat extract transform load as a deliberate methodology: staging, repeatable/idempotent loads, full vs. incremental loads, and validation and reconciliation at each stage.
  • Track record owning technical projects with external stakeholders - managing scope, timelines, and expectations.
  • Experience with messy, poorly documented legacy systems and a bias toward action under ambiguity.
  • Familiarity with OSS/BSS, telecom, or billing/CRM data models (e.g. subscribers, services, billing accounts) - or the ability to ramp on unfamiliar domain models quickly.
  • Excellent communicator across technical and non-technical audiences, including clients.
  • Comfortable being the decision-maker on technical and customer trade-offs.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Information Systems), or equivalent practical experience.
  • Ability to travel occasionally in the US to support customers during key engagements and go-lives.

Salary

At gaiia, we have a transparent salary philosophy and a robust evaluation and compensation framework. It translates to a fair and impartial model where salaries are published internally, healthy discussions about compensation and performance can exist, and taboos are removed.

Benefits

  • Flexible 25-days of vacation.
  • Stock Options Plan.
  • Group Insurance.
  • Telemedicine.
  • Life Spending Account.
  • GRSP.
  • Flexible working hours & all-remote work.
