Fleet Thermal Engineer

Work Locations: Tri-State Area: New York, NY, Connecticut, CT, and New Jersey, NJ OR Houston, TX areas

Compensation: $165k-$180k + bonus

Travel: Up to 40%, particularly during outage seasons

Position Overview:

The Fleet Thermal Engineer role is to provide fleet-wide engineering support for thermal systems, with primary emphasis on boiler performance, high-energy piping reliability, and steam cycle equipment. The role supports plant operations, maintenance, and outage planning by resolving thermal performance and equipment reliability issues and implementing engineering solutions that enhance efficiency and safe operation. Responsibilities include Balance of Plant thermal system support• covering condensers, cooling towers, and air-cooled condensers• and leadership in the implementation and continuous improvement of the fleet Boiler Program.

The Fleet Thermal Engineer works closely with fleet engineering, plant operations, maintenance teams, and third-party vendors to ensure consistent application of fleet standards, reliability programs, and thermal engineering best practices.

Role and Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and take ownership of the Fleet Boiler Program, including inspection planning, performance monitoring, and tracking of boiler tube failures and corrective actions.
  • Work with plant personnel to ensure the fleet boiler program and appropriate procedures are being followed accordingly.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for fleet Boilers, HRSGs, High Energy Piping systems, Condensers, Heat Exchangers, and related steam cycle equipment.
  • Support Balance of Plant equipment beyond the boiler, assisting with performance assessment, troubleshooting, and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Investigate and support resolution of boiler-related operational challenges including tube leaks, fouling, overheating, and thermal stress conditions.
  • Support inspection, reliability assessment, and life management of High Energy Piping (HEP) systems, including evaluation of creep damage, thermal fatigue, and stress-related degradation mechanisms.
  • Analyze plant operational data to identify thermal performance trends and recommend improvements to maintain efficiency and reliability of steam cycle equipment.
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) for thermal, steam cycle, condenser, cooling tower, ACC, and related BOP system events within the thermal discipline, and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide engineering support during planned and forced outages, including scope development, repair recommendations, and review of inspection findings.
  • Review vendor reports, inspection data, and technical documentation to support equipment reliability and lifecycle management.
  • Provide general engineering support for Balance of Plant (BOP) systems associated with the steam cycle, assisting with performance evaluations, troubleshooting, and reliability improvements.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and fleet engineering teams to implement engineering solutions and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Professional Requirements:
  • Minimum 7 years of relevant engineering experience in the power generation industry, with 10+ years preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred; Electrical, Industrial, or related Engineering may be considered with relevant thermal and steam cycle experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated experience with boilers or HRSGs, high energy piping, condenser performance, steam cycle systems, outage support, and reliability improvement programs in utility, power generation, or comparable industrial environments.
  • Self-starter and motivated individual who takes initiative and demonstrates full ownership of activities required to fulfill the role.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities across fleet sites.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with plant personnel, engineering, and operations leadership to find practical solutions to problems encountered.
