The FinOps Engineer will be responsible for analyzing, forecasting, and optimizing AWS cloud spend, developing cost visibility tools, and collaborating with team members and customers to drive cost-effective cloud use. This is a hands-on role. You will build the dashboards, automation, and governance that let teams move fast on AWS while spending wisely.
Key Responsibilities include:- Analyze and monitor spend: Track AWS usage and cost using Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports (CUR), Cost Optimization Hub, Budgets, and Trusted Advisor, plus third-party platforms such as CloudHealth, Cloudability, or CloudZero.
- Find and eliminate waste: Identify idle, orphaned, and overprovisioned resources across compute, storage, networking, databases, and managed services, and quantify the savings of each opportunity.
- Manage commitments: Recommend and manage Savings Plans, Reserved Instances, and Spot usage, tracking coverage and utilization to maximize discount without overcommitting.
- Build visibility: Create and maintain dashboards, executive summaries, and show back/chargeback reporting (QuickSight, Tableau, Power BI) for engineering, finance, and leadership.
- Forecast and budget: Deliver forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis, partnering with Finance on planning cycles and explaining month-over-month changes in plain business terms.
- Detect anomalies: Configure cost anomaly detection and alerting and lead rapid investigation and remediation of unexpected spend.
- Drive cost allocation: Design and enforce tagging standards and account structure (AWS Organizations, Service Control Policies, tag policies) so every dollar maps to a team, product, or customer.
- Automate controls: Use Terraform or CloudFormation and scripting (Python, Bash) to automate rightsizing, scheduling, tag compliance, and budget guardrails, and integrate cost checks into CI/CD pipelines.
- Partner with engineering: Advise on cost-efficient architecture (including Kubernetes/EKS, containers, and serverless) without compromising performance, reliability, or security.
- Mature the FinOps practice: Define KPIs such as cost per unit, savings realized, and commitment coverage; run regular stakeholder reviews; and deliver training and documentation that spread FinOps best practices.
Education and Experience:- Proven experience with machine learning and statistical modeling.
- Bachelor's degree (Master's degree in a quantitative or technical field preferred) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Finance, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in cloud cost optimization, FinOps, or cloud engineering, with a strong focus on AWS.
- Deep understanding of AWS pricing and billing models and the cost drivers of core services (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, EKS, data transfer).
- Hands-on experience with AWS cost tooling (Cost Explorer, CUR, Budgets) and at least one FinOps platform or BI tool.
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or CloudFormation) and scripting for automation (Python, Bash, or PowerShell).
- Proven ability to translate technical usage into financial insight and to communicate with both engineers and finance leaders.
- Working knowledge of FinOps principles and the Inform, Optimize, Operate lifecycle.
Required Skills and Competencies:- Strong understanding of AWS pricing models, services, and cost management tools.
- FinOps Certified Practitioner (or higher) and/or AWS certifications such as Cloud Practitioner, Solutions Architect, or DevOps Engineer.
- Familiarity with the FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS).
- Experience with Kubernetes cost allocation and optimization (EKS, Kubecost) and with serverless and container architectures.
- Experience with multi-account governance at scale and multi-cloud cost management (Azure, GCP).
- SQL and data-analysis skills (for example Athena over CUR data) and experience building financial or forecasting models.
- Experience building cost awareness into DevOps or CI/CD workflows and working in Agile/Scrum teams.
- Background establishing or maturing a FinOps practice, including executive reporting and unit-economics metrics.
- Analytical and data-driven, with strong financial modeling instincts.
