What we are looking for
The Controller leads the accounting function across a multi-entity cannabis operator with retail, distribution, and cultivation activity. This role oversees the month-end close, consolidated financial reporting, technical accounting positions, and the accounting team. Close processes, reconciliations, and reporting workflows are established and refined, and the Controller inherits a capable team already in place.
Responsibilities
Financial Reporting and Close
• Oversee the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close across all JARS entities.
• Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting policy documentation.
• Ensure all reporting is GAAP compliant and audit ready.
Technical Accounting and Compliance
• Oversee technical accounting positions including inventory and cost capitalization, revenue recognition, leases.
• Maintain and continuously improve the internal control environment across cash, inventory, payroll, and financial reporting.
• Manage the annual financial statement audit and coordinate directly with our Audit Manager, external auditors and tax advisors.
• Ensure compliance with state cannabis regulatory reporting requirements and internal company policies.
Team Leadership
• Lead an established corporate accounting team, including managers, tax accountants, staff accountants, senior staff accountants, and the AP/AR function.
• Maintain close calendars, review workpapers, and hold the team to quality and deadline standards.
• Provide training, coaching, and performance feedback.
Systems and Process
• Oversee the accounting systems footprint, including the ERP and related close, AP, and reporting tools, with support from an in-house development resource.
• Contribute to continuous improvement across the close, reconciliations, and reporting workflows, which are already established and refined.
Business Partnership
• Support finance leaders in financial planning, forecasting, cash management, and strategic initiatives.
• Provide clear, timely variance explanations and financial insight to leadership.
• Serve as a trusted partner to Retail, Distribution, HR, and Legal.
Qualifications
• Minimum of six years of progressive accounting experience, including at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role.
• BA/BS in Accounting or Finance required. CPA preferred.
• Multi-entity consolidation experience under US GAAP required.
• Cannabis industry experience strongly preferred, with direct working knowledge of IRC 280E cost allocation, inventory capitalization, and vertical operator accounting.
• Manufacturing or standard costing experience strongly preferred.
• Sage Intacct experience is a plus. Power BI and advanced Excel are required. Comfortable working in an AI-forward environment.
• Experience managing external audits and working with tax advisors on complex, regulated entities.
• Deadline-driven leader with strong communication, judgment, and the ability to operate calmly in a fast-moving, high-accountability environment.
