Simulation Engineer

If you are an ENGINEERING professional looking for an opportunity to grow, Copeland has an exciting opportunity for you!  As a Modeling & Simulation Engineer, you will work collaboratively with a global multi-disciplinary engineering team to develop, validate, and standardize 1D/2D/3D HVACR system, sub-system simulation models using model-based engineering tools and methodologies. You will also demonstrate ability to diligently track and manage progress of the work by facilitating open dialog with a wide variety of stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly technical engineering team working in a fast paced, innovative, and global environment with an objective of assuring that Copeland’s products meet and exceed customer expectations.

As a Simulation Engineer, you will:

  • Execute simulation-driven product development through advanced FEA/multi-physics methodologies, model validation, automation, and optimization techniques, enabling improved product performance, reduced physical testing, and accelerated time-to-market.
  • Execute development & implementation of simulation models to aid design of HVACR systems, sub-systems, components using industry leading simulation tools.
  • Develop, execute, and interpret high-fidelity FEA simulations of compressor components and assemblies. Provide data-driven recommendations to Product Engineering regarding design performance, Strength behavior, manufacturability, reliability, and cost-reduction opportunities.
  • Execute activities to verify and validate (V&V) simulation models. This will require partnering with global subject matter experts, creating test plans, and/or leveraging available test data by working with other engineering teams.
  • Effectively communicate project status to various stakeholders in the organization by preparing presentation of results.

Required Education, Experience, & Skills:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/Civil Engineering or closely related field, plus a minimum of 2 years relevant experience.
  • Hands-on experience applying 1D and 3D simulation tools within a Simulation-Driven Product Development environment.
  • Proven track record of applying fundamental engineering principles and creative thinking to drive timely engineering decisions.
  • Act as the technical support for structural simulation activities, including static, dynamic, fatigue, vibration, thermal-stress, contact, nonlinear and vibro-acoustic analyses of compressor and HVACR components.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate complex simulation results into actionable engineering decisions.
  • Effective communication skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative partnerships on a global basis.

Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Hands-on experience using model-based engineering concepts, principles, and theories to aid creation of simulation models or processes.
  • Experience using commercial and/or open-source FEA software such as Simcenter 3D, ANSYS Mechanical, GT-suite or equivalent.
  • Strong expertise in FEA preprocessing, mesh generation, mesh quality assessment, and mesh independence studies for complex components and assemblies.
  • Knowledge of best practices and procedures for structural analysis.
  • Strong understanding of engineering physics, solid mechanical, linear/transient dynamics, multi-physics simulations, numerical methods, and verification & validation (V&V) methodologies.
  • Experience developing simulation automation, data processing, and workflow integration tools using Python and/or other programming languages (C/C++, MATLAB, PyAnsys etc.).
  • Experience with rotating machinery, compressors, pumps, fans, or turbomachinery applications.
  • Experience in CFD & multi-physics would be added advantage.
  • Experience with optimization tools, Design of Experiments (DOE), and digital engineering & AL assisted workflow development.
