Trauma Acute Care Surgeon Opening with the University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ)Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson | Banner - University Medical Center TucsonThe Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Critical Care, Burn and Emergency Surgery at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Tucson invites applications from fellowship-trained surgeons for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. Rank and track will be commensurate with the successful candidate's clinical experience and scholarly record.
The Division provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary surgical and critical care to trauma, burn, and emergency general surgery patients across southern Arizona, serving as a regional referral center for a large and clinically complex catchment area. We are seeking a colleague who will contribute meaningfully to all three of the Division's missions - outstanding patient care, the education of the next generation of surgeons, and the advancement of the field through scholarship.
This is an academic position. Scholarly productivity is highly desired and supported with mentorship and institutional research infrastructure appropriate to the candidate's rank and academic focus.
Clinical Responsibilities• Provide comprehensive, high-quality care to trauma and emergency general surgery patients across the continuum of care
• Staff the surgical intensive care unit
• Participate in equitable in-house trauma and emergency general surgery call, taken concurrently, with backup call coverage as needed
• Opportunity to develop and maintain an elective surgical practice aligned with divisional and institutional priorities is optional
Academic and Scholarly Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to establish, extend, and sustain a program of scholarship. Areas of focus may include clinical outcomes research, translational or basic science investigation, health services and injury prevention research, educational scholarship, or quality improvement and program development.
• Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at regional and national scientific meetings
• Pursue intramural and extramural research funding appropriate to academic focus and career stage
• Maintain active membership and pursue leadership roles in national professional societies (AAST, EAST, ACS Committee on Trauma, SCCM, ABA, and others)
• Contribute to the Division's clinical research and quality improvement infrastructure, including participation in multicenter trials and registry-based studies
• Collaborate across the University of Arizona Health Sciences, including opportunities to engage with investigators in engineering, public health, pharmacy, and the basic sciences
• Senior candidates: provide mentorship to junior faculty, fellows, and residents in research design, manuscript development, and academic career progression
Educational Responsibilities• Teach and mentor medical students, general surgery residents, and surgical critical care fellows in both clinical and didactic settings
• Serve as an ATLS instructor
• Provide leadership in medical student, resident, or fellowship education commensurate with rank and experience
• Support faculty development and mentorship within the Division
Leadership Opportunities Depending on experience and interest, the position may include formal programmatic leadership within the Division. We are actively interested in candidates positioned to grow into divisional and departmental leadership position.
Minimum Qualifications• MD, DO, or equivalent degree; eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Arizona
• Board certified or board eligible in General Surgery
• Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care and/or Acute Care/Trauma Surgery
• Evidence of clinical and didactic teaching ability
• A record of peer-reviewed publication and active professional society membership, commensurate with career stage
• ATLS instructor qualification, or eligibility and willingness to obtain it
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of patients, students, trainees, and colleagues
Desired Qualifications• An established or clearly emerging program of scholarship with a defined thematic focus
• History of extramural or intramural research funding, or a demonstrable trajectory toward it
• Experience mentoring students, residents, fellows, or junior faculty in scholarly work
• Leadership experience in education, quality improvement, or program development
