Full Job Description
The Department of Physics & Astronomy (http://www.physics.sunysb.edu/Physics/) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenured faculty position at the associate/full professor level in experimental physics within the area of Quantum Information Science and Technology (QIST).
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Physics or a closely related field, demonstrated record of research leadership in a QIST-relevant experimental physics research area with a preference for candidates having carried out research using ion trapping methods. Faculty are expected to engage in independently funded research characterized by creativity and vision, with commitment to the teaching missions of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, including our Master of Science program in QIST. Existing relevant research efforts in the Department include ultracold atoms and quantum gases, ultrafast dynamics of molecules and materials, photonic quantum devices, quantum optics, quantum communication and entanglement distribution, and quantum materials. The successful applicant will complement and expand on our efforts in these areas. We are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in using ion trapping systems for quantum information processing to complement our work in the development of large-scale sensing systems that are enabled by long-distance quantum networks.
This position is part of a larger university plan for a major investment in the QIST area, which would include considerable resources to support QIST-relevant research across the University and specifically within the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Applications will be made through the Interfolio web service (Job ID: 193441) They should include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of up to three recent papers, a research statement, a statement of teaching philosophy, and names and affiliations of at least three references. The candidate should use the options provided at the Interfolio website to request the letters of reference. The review of applications will begin on October 30, 2026, and will continue until the position is filled.
The programs in physics at Stony Brook are characterized by highly ranked faculty, excellent students, and close affiliation with experimental and theoretical research centers of international reputation, including the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, the C.N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, the Institute for Advanced Computational Science, the Flatiron Institute and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ph.D. in physics or a related subject.
• Research in experimental QIST
• At least 5 years of faculty-level research or equivalent experience
• Clear and concise oral and written communication and interpersonal and analytical skills.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Research using ion trapping
• Active research funding
• Established outreach program
• Demonstrated Ph.D. student supervision
• Experience specifying and commissioning their laboratory
• Experience working with a broad student population and the ability to foster academic excellence, collaboration, and a respectful learning environment within the Department and University
