Full Job Description
Environmental, Regulatory & Safety Specialist North Coast Container | Chicago, IL | Full-time, Exempt
Our Chicago plant is looking for an Environmental, Regulatory & Safety (ERS) Specialist to be the go-to person for keeping our people safe and our operations compliant. You'll work on the plant floor and in the office, reporting directly to the Plant Manager. You'll have real influence over how we operate, and you'll also help shape ERS programs across our other plants.
What you'll do
Spot hazards before they become injuries. You'll analyze the risks that come with people, equipment and machinery, and decide how to control them.
Lead incident investigations and near-miss reviews. You'll find the root cause, spot trends, and make sure the fix sticks.
Lead audit teams at the plant level, verifying that safety and environmental practices are followed day to day and month to month.
Own regulatory compliance. You'll interpret federal, state and municipal environmental, health and safety requirements as they apply to steel manufacturing and recycling, and make the call on what we need to do about them.
Prepare and submit environmental and safety reports, correspondence and permit applications for the site.
Build better ERS programs. You'll design and improve the policies, tools and training that bring ERS goals to life across the company.
Coach and communicate. You'll explain requirements clearly to people at every level of the organization, from the plant floor to leadership.
What you bring
An associate degree in Environmental Science or a related field, or equivalent experience and knowledge
At least 2 years of experience in a manufacturing environment
Working knowledge of Illinois environmental, health and safety regulations
Experience with incident investigation and root cause analysis
Strong communication skills and a collaborative, hands-on style
Comfort with PowerPoint, Word, Excel and other everyday business tools
Willingness to travel to our other plants
A plus: exposure to Lean, Six Sigma or the Toyota Production System
Why you'll like it here
A role with visibility and a seat at the table, not a back-office compliance job
Room to grow as our ERS program expands across plants
