Full Job Description
Federal Signal is seeking a driven and innovative Mechanical Engineer II to join our engineering team in University Park, IL. In this role, you will play a key part in the design, development, and validation of cutting-edge electromechanical products that support critical applications.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys hands-on product development, cross-functional collaboration, and taking designs from concept through production in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Product Design & Development
  • Design and develop electromechanical products that meet customer needs and industry standards
  • Apply GD&T principles to ensure functional, manufacturable, and robust designs
  • Create 3D models and detailed drawings using NX, Creo, or SolidWorks
  • Conduct feasibility studies, prototype development, and cost evaluations

Analysis, Testing & Validation
  • Perform and interpret FEA to ensure structural integrity and product reliability
  • Develop, execute, and analyze product validation test plans and reports
  • Use engineering fundamentals (mechanics, dynamics, statistics) to evaluate design performance

Manufacturing & Product Support
  • Design for a variety of manufacturing processes (injection molding, sheet metal, machining, extrusion, cable assemblies)
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, sourcing, and quality teams to drive design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and cost efficiency
  • Troubleshoot product issues and support production, technicians, and assembly teams

Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including DFMEAs and specifications
  • Apply Six Sigma tools (DOE, FMEA, Pugh Matrix, VOC) to improve product performance and quality
  • Support production, cost reduction initiatives, resolve field issues, and evaluate end-of-life component replacements

Collaboration & Leadership
  • Partner with electrical engineers, PCB designers, and other disciplines to ensure seamless integration
  • Work with vendors to define component specifications and processes
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Engineer I team members

Project Execution & Documentation
  • Support project timelines and milestones using sound project management practices
  • Create Engineering Change Requests (ECRs), BOMs, and product structures
  • Develop work instructions and contribute to customer-facing technical documentation
  • Summarize R&D efforts in clear technical reports

Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field

Wage Range: $68,730/yr - $98,187
