Full Job Description
Position Description

EIP is seeking an FA Engineer II in Chicago to support engineering assessments and project development for ComEd facilities work. The engineer will examine building and equipment performance, identify practical energy efficiency opportunities, develop defensible savings estimates, and prepare clear technical recommendations for customers and program teams.

This role combines on-site assessment with analysis and follow-through. The FA Engineer II will collect facility and utility data, evaluate existing systems and operating practices, apply applicable program methods and technical reference materials, and work with customers and contractors to move viable improvements toward implementation.

The ideal candidate has at least five years of relevant building energy engineering experience, sound judgment in the field, strong Excel and technical writing skills, and the ability to explain engineering findings to people with different levels of technical knowledge.

Objectives of this Role
  • Facility Assessments: Conduct thorough assessments that establish existing conditions and identify actionable energy and demand reduction opportunities.
  • Savings Analysis: Develop accurate, transparent estimates of energy, demand, and cost savings using approved program methods and appropriate engineering calculations.
  • Project Development: Help turn assessment findings into feasible scopes that account for facility operations, customer priorities, costs, and implementation constraints.
  • Technical Quality: Maintain reliable documentation and quality checks so recommendations and savings claims can be reviewed and reproduced.
  • Customer Collaboration: Communicate findings clearly and work constructively with facility staff, contractors, utility representatives, and EIP program teams.
  • Program Delivery: Complete assigned assessments and technical deliverables on schedule while supporting customer satisfaction and program performance goals.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities
  • Plan and Conduct Site Assessments: Coordinate site visits, interview facility personnel, document equipment and operations, and safely inspect major energy-using systems.
  • Analyze Facility Data: Review utility bills, interval data, equipment inventories, drawings, controls trends, operating schedules, and available maintenance records; identify data gaps and validate key assumptions.
  • Identify Improvement Opportunities: Evaluate HVAC and central plants, building controls, lighting, motors, pumps, domestic hot water, building envelope, and other relevant systems for operational and capital improvements.
  • Calculate Energy Savings: Prepare prescriptive and custom savings calculations using applicable Illinois technical reference manual methods, program tools, engineering analysis, and documented assumptions.
  • Evaluate Economics: Estimate energy and demand impacts, utility cost savings, project costs, available incentives, and simple payback; account for interactions among recommended measures.
  • Prepare Assessment Deliverables: Write concise reports and technical summaries describing existing conditions, recommended measures, savings methods, costs, and implementation considerations.
  • Review Technical Work: Check calculations, source data, formulas, units, baselines, equipment specifications, and supporting documentation; resolve discrepancies before submission.
  • Support Project Advancement: Discuss findings with customers and contractors, help refine scopes, answer technical questions, and support incentive or project documentation as assigned.
  • Verify Project Conditions: Conduct follow-up visits or document reviews as needed to confirm installed equipment and operating conditions and update savings estimates.
  • Manage Work and Records: Maintain organized calculation files, site notes, review comments, and project records; track assignments and communicate schedule or technical risks promptly.
  • Improve Delivery Practices: Share recurring technical issues and customer feedback with the team and contribute to better assessment methods, tools, and quality controls.

Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent relevant technical experience.
  • Experience: At least five years of relevant experience in building energy assessments, energy engineering, utility energy efficiency programs, or related facility engineering work.
  • Building Systems Knowledge: Working knowledge of commercial and institutional HVAC, controls, lighting, and other major energy-using systems and their operating characteristics.
  • Savings Analysis: Ability to develop and review transparent engineering calculations and apply technical reference manuals, approved calculators, or utility program methods.
  • Field Assessment Skills: Ability to collect and interpret site data, identify practical opportunities, and conduct facility visits safely and professionally.
  • Analytical Tools: Strong Excel skills and ability to work with utility consumption data, equipment information, technical documents, and project tracking systems.
  • Communication: Clear technical writing and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain findings and coordinate with customers, contractors, and program staff.
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple assignments, meet deadlines, document work accurately, and travel to facilities in the Chicago area as required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Illinois Utility Programs: Experience with ComEd or other Illinois utility energy efficiency programs and the Illinois Technical Reference Manual.
  • Commercial Assessments: Experience conducting ASHRAE Level 1 or Level 2 assessments for commercial, institutional, or public facilities.
  • Custom Engineering: Experience with custom savings calculations, building controls analysis, measurement and verification, or energy modeling.
  • Professional Credentials: Engineer in Training, Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager, Certified Energy Auditor, or another relevant credential.
  • Project Implementation: Experience working with owners and contractors to develop scopes, evaluate costs, and verify installed improvements.
