Primary Purpose of Position The Energy Analyst serves as the University's technical expert for energy and utility data management, utility billing administration, and building performance analytics across campus facilities. This position supports the monitoring, analysis, and administration of energy and water usage data to ensure billing accuracy, identify cost-saving opportunities, and support the department's continuous commissioning and energy conservation programs. Working closely with the Energy Manager and Energy Engineer, the Energy Analyst provides data-driven analysis, identifies utility and metering anomalies, and develops energy savings calculations that support capital and operational project decisions. This role balances data administration, analytical rigor, and cross-team collaboration, with a long-term focus on data integrity and campus-wide energy performance visibility.
Summary of Position Responsibilities The Energy Analyst administers the University's monthly utility chargeback process, including submeter utility data review and analysis, and reconciles billing and usage data across all utility types. The position also maintains the integrity of metering and fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) data, escalating anomalies to the Energy Engineer for investigation. In support of the Energy Manager and Energy Engineer, the Analyst prepares dashboards and benchmarking reports, compiles building automation system (BAS) trend data and measurement and verification (M&V) data sets, and provides savings-calculation data for capital and energy efficiency project proposals. The Analyst also automates recurring data and reporting workflows.
- Administer the monthly utility chargeback process to campus departments, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and resolution of billing disputes.
- Administer utility metering infrastructure (electric, gas, water, BTU), including data quality checks, calibration flags, and anomaly escalation.
- Serve as primary administrator of enterprise energy and utility management software platform (EnergyCAP) and reconcile utility accounts against secondary data sources (e.g., Capturis, BAS).
- Compile, reconcile, and quality-check campus energy and water use across utility types using a live interval data dashboard in the enterprise
- Analyze building automation system (BAS) data, meter trends, and fault detection & diagnostics (FDD) outputs to identify anomalies and inefficiencies.
- Support point mapping and data integrity for the FDD platform in coordination with the Energy Engineer and BAS Shop.
- Develop dashboards, reports, and benchmarking analyses (e.g., EUI, weather normalization) to track building and campus performance over time.
- Assist the Energy Engineer with M&V data for energy and cost savings models for conservation measures.
- Support pre- and post-implementation M&V for capital and operational energy conservation measures.
- Provide savings-calculation support for capital project proposals and state energy fund (1292) justifications.
Minimum Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Computer Science, Data Analytics, or a related field, and three years of experience in energy data analysis, utility management, facility operations, or building performance analysis; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience - Advanced proficiency in Excel and data tools for large-scale utility and metering dataset analysis
- Strong understanding of utility billing structures, rate analysis, and metering systems.
- Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), FDD platforms, and enterprise energy and utility management software platforms (EnergyCAP) or comparable utility management software.
- Working knowledge of HVAC/mechanical and control systems sufficient to interpret BAS data and collaborate effectively with engineering staff.
- Strong communication, documentation, and analytical skills.
