The Electrical Power Engineer will be a key member of ourengineering and automation team, delivering power system solutions toindustrial clients across Canada and the U.S. This role focuses on electricalpower system design, analysis, and compliance, working with voltage levels from120V to 35kV. The engineer will collaborate with internal and externalstakeholders to ensure project success, meeting regulatory requirements andsafety standards. This position requires proficiency in Canadian electrical design,with U.S. design expertise (NEC) considered a strong asset. Work will beperformed in-office or on-site as needed, often under tight deadlines.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Design and engineer electrical power systems forindustrial applications, ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code(CEC) or National Electrical Code (NEC), depending on the project location.
• Develop single-line diagrams, protectionschemes, and equipment layouts for medium/low-voltage power distributionsystems, including switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), and variablefrequency drives (VFDs).
• Perform power system studies using ETAP, SKM, orEasyPower, including:
o Load flow analysis
o Short circuit calculations
o Arc flash hazard assessments (CSA Z462/NFPA 70E)
o Protective device coordination
• Specify and evaluate electrical equipment suchas transformers, circuit breakers, and relays, ensuring compatibility with bothCanadian or U.S. market requirements.
• Prepare cable schedules, conduit routing plans,and grounding designs.
• Review and approve vendor drawings, ensuringadherence to project specifications and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct commissioning activities, includingFactory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and on-site supervision.
• Provide technical guidance on hybrid systemsintegrating renewable energy sources (solar, wind) into industrial power grids.
• Collaborate with project managers, designers,and clients to ensure deliverables align with timelines and budgets.
• Support proposal development by estimatinglabor, materials, and compliance costs for cross-border projects.
• Liaise with utilities (e.g., grid operators)regarding metering, interconnection, and power quality requirements.
• Travel for client site visits, commissioning, ortroubleshooting.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering witha focus on Power Systems from an accredited institution.
• Professional Designation:
o Registered as a P.Eng. with Engineers andGeoscientists BC (EGBC) or eligible for registration.
o U.S. Professional Engineer (PE) licensure is aplus.
• 10+ years in industrial electrical design,including hands-on work with medium/low-voltage systems.
• Expertise in power analysis software (ETAP, SKM,EasyPower) for studies such as harmonic analysis, voltage drop, and transientstability.
• In-depth knowledge of CEC, NEC, IEEE, and NFPAstandards (IEC 60909 knowledge is advantageous).
• Proven track record in cross-border projects(e.g., mining, manufacturing, oil & gas sectors) an asset.
• Familiarity with U.S. federal and stateregulations (OSHA, NERC) impacting industrial power systems.
Skills& Competencies
• Ability to interpret and apply CEC Section 36(High-Voltage Installations) and NEC Article 490 (Equipment Over 1,000V).
• Strong analytical skills for fault currentcalculations, relay settings, and ground grid design (IEEE 80).
• Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or SolidWorksElectrical for drafting power schematics.
• Excellent communication skills to effectivelycommunicate with multiple stakeholders.
