Position OverviewVarcoMac is seeking an experienced Estimator to support our preconstruction and estimating team. This role is responsible for developing accurate, timely, and competitive cost estimates for commercial electrical construction projects. The Estimator will independently prepare project estimates, coordinate with vendors and internal stakeholders, and support successful project pursuit efforts across a diverse portfolio of work.
Project types include data centers, biopharmaceutical facilities, semiconductor facilities, office buildings, laboratories, and light industrial projects, ranging in value from $50K to $100M. This position requires close coordination with project managers, business development personnel, vendors, subcontractors, and operations teams to support successful project delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Communicate and coordinate bid requirements with internal teams, customers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Provide estimating support and cost recommendations during bid development.
- Serve as a key resource for bid-related questions and scope clarification during the estimating process.
- Design, Technical, or Operational Execution
- Read, interpret, and assign costs to bid documents, including drawings, specifications, addenda, and instructions to bidders.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs and unit cost estimates for commercial electrical construction projects.
- Prepare pricing breakouts and alternates as required by customers.
- Develop accurate and complete estimates for both design-build and plan/specification projects.
- Evaluate project risks, scope gaps, and opportunities during estimate preparation.
- Project & Cross-Discipline Coordination
- Request, obtain, and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
- Coordinate with project management and operations teams to ensure estimate completeness and constructability.
- Support bid reviews and estimate presentations with company leadership and stakeholders.
- Documentation & Communication
- Maintain electronic records of all estimating documents, assumptions, calculations, vendor quotations, and supporting data.
- Organize bid documentation and maintain estimating files in accordance with company standards.
- Prepare reports and estimate summaries for internal review and customer submission.
- Ensure all deliverables are completed accurately and submitted within established deadlines.
Desired Skills and Experience- Education & Credentials
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant estimating experience will be considered.
- Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of proven success preparing estimates for commercial construction projects, preferably within electrical construction.
- Experience estimating projects ranging from $50K to $100M.
- Commercial MEP estimating experience is a plus.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams and construction stakeholders.
- Technical & Professional Skills
- Strong knowledge of commercial electrical construction methods, materials, and systems.
- Competency with computerized estimating and digital takeoff software; ConEst experience is preferred.
- Ability to estimate both design-build and plan/specification projects.
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and produce accurate deliverables within strict deadlines.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to quality and accuracy.

- Salary Range: $80,000 to $110,000
