Full Job Description
The EMI/EMC Design Engineer V/VI is a senior-level individual contributor role responsible for building electromagnetic compatibility into Zone 5 products from the start of design. This position leads EMI/EMC design practices across electronics, harnesses, and vehicle-level integration, ensuring our UAS and weapon systems meet customer electromagnetic environmental effects (E3) requirements and pass qualification the first time.
Responsibilities:
Design for EMC: Lead EMI/EMC design across PCB layout, enclosure design, filtering, shielding, cable design, and bonding/grounding schemes.
Requirements Definition: Interpret customer E3 requirements and flow down MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 requirements to subsystems and suppliers.
E3 Control Planning: Author and maintain E3 control plans, EMI test plans and procedures (EMITP), and EMI test reports.
Analysis & Simulation: Perform EMI/EMC analysis and electromagnetic simulation to identify and mitigate coupling, emissions, and susceptibility risks early in design.
Pre-Compliance Testing: Plan and conduct pre-compliance scans and troubleshooting in-house to reduce risk prior to formal qualification.
Qualification Support: Support formal EMI/EMC qualification testing at internal and external labs and lead failure investigations and fixes.
Design Reviews: Review schematics, layouts, and harness designs for EMC compliance and present E3 status at design reviews (PDR, CDR, TRR).
Customer Interface: Serve as the technical point of contact with customers on E3 requirements, test results, and waivers.
Mentorship: Mentor electrical engineers in EMC design principles and best practices.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
Experience: 10+ years of experience in EMI/EMC design and test for aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability systems.
Skills:
Expert knowledge of MIL-STD-461 (CE102, CS101, CS114, CS116, RE102, RS103) and MIL-STD-464.
Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory, shielding, filtering, grounding, and PCB layout for EMC, including reviewing layouts in Altium.
Hands-on experience with EMI test equipment (spectrum analyzers, LISNs, current probes, antennas).
Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve EMI/EMC failures.
Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
U.S. Person status required due to export control regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering.
iNARTE or equivalent EMC certification.
Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools (e.g., CST Studio Suite, Ansys HFSS, EMA3D).
Experience with lightning, ESD, and HERO requirements for ordnance and weapon systems.
Familiarity with DO-160 and MIL-STD-704.
Experience with RF datalinks, antennas, and co-site interference.
Active U.S. security clearance or ability to obtain.
