Electrical Controls Engineer, R&D

Team: R&D / New Product Development

Location: Oakville, ON

We're looking for an Electrical Controls Engineer to join our R&D team and lead the development of new electric heat-generating technologies for a variety of markets. This role is pivotal in driving our mission to support global decarbonization and digitization trends through advanced electric heating solutions.

This opportunity is ideal for an engineer with a solid foundation in Industrial Control Systems, PLC programming, instrumentation, and electrical engineering principles. The Electrical Controls R&D Engineer works in a fast-paced lab environment as part of a team designing, developing, and testing concepts for new product introductions.

What You'll Do
  • Work in cross-functional teams to transform conceptual ideas into fully commercializable new products.
  • Apply electrical engineering principles to develop product controls and electrical designs for multiple products and heating applications (e.g., load banks, industrial process heating, environmental heating, vaporizers, ice and snow melters, etc.).
  • Develop control system architecture, component selection, schematic diagrams, P&IDs, system documentation, and controller/process visualization programming (PLC & HMI).
  • Create control algorithms for thermal processes, including temperature or pressure regulation, sequencing, alarming, and safety interlocks.
  • Support integration of remote monitoring, Industrial IoT, and data collection and analytics capabilities where applicable.
  • Review technical specifications; prepare and review drawings, bills of materials, and other engineering documentation.
  • Balance innovation with regulatory, technical, and commercial constraints to ensure product viability and success.
  • Develop and execute test plans to understand technical concepts and validate new designs.
  • Perform troubleshooting and resolution analysis on a variety of heating products and associated equipment.
  • Provide technical support to Sales, Engineering, Production, Purchasing, and Quality departments.
  • Maintain awareness of state-of-the-art technologies. Keep Thermon abreast of the latest industry trends and recommend responsive actions.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in an Electrical Engineering role.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Industrial Control Systems
    • PLC programming (ladder logic and structured text)
    • HMI & SCADA development
    • Instrumentation and sensors
    • Electrical fundamentals
    • Industrial communications and networking
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP and Modbus TCP.
  • Familiarity with electrical design software (AutoCAD Electrical, SEE Electrical, or equivalent).
  • Proficiency reading and creating electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong understanding of project management principles, risk assessment, and go/no-go decision-making.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to apply scientific principles to address complex challenges.
  • Familiarity and experience with certification bodies and standards, including CSA, UL, and IEC.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

Bonus Points For
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or similar PLC platforms.
  • Knowledge of temperature control systems, PID tuning, and thermal dynamics.
  • Direct experience designing, specifying, or testing electric heating equipment.
  • Familiarity with electric control systems and power electronics.
  • Exposure to embedded system design and programming.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or progress toward certification.
