What will you do?As an Electrical CAD Designer, you will own schematic capture, cabling drawings, panel documentation, and 2D mechanical drawing production across a wide range of engineering programs. Projects span from precision optical subassemblies with well-defined interfaces to complete automation systems involving PLCs, electrical cabinets, and integrated PCs.
This is a SolidWorks-native role requiring the use of SolidWorks Electrical Professional for 3D harness routing and 2D schematic/cabling documentation. On the mechanical side you will work within SolidWorks to produce 2D manufacturing and assembly drawings from existing 3D models.
Essential Job Functions:Electrical Documentation- Develop 2D schematics, wiring diagrams, wire lists, and harness/cable drawings in SolidWorks Electrical Professional, linked to the 3D mechanical model
- Generate and maintain panel layouts for electrical cabinets including PLC I/O, power distribution, and PC/compute integration
- Translate system interface control documents (ICDs) into compliant cabling designs for optical and motion subassemblies where scope is bounded to motors, sensors, and signal/power interconnect
- Build and maintain component/connector libraries within SolidWorks Electrical - pinouts, wire gauge, color coding, manufacturer part numbers
- Generate and synchronize BOMs directly from schematics through design revisions
Mechanical Drawing Production- Produce 2D detail drawings, assembly drawings, and drawing packages from existing SolidWorks models - fully dimensioned with GD&T, tolerances, notes, and title block per drawing standards
- Create exploded views, section cuts, presentation configurations, and documentation-oriented model manipulations (part visibility, color states, simplified representations) to support assembly instructions, proposals, and customer deliverables
- Maintain drawing revision history and ensure drawing packages stay synchronized with model changes
Cross-functional- Coordinate with mechanical, optical, and controls engineers to resolve interface questions, routing conflicts, and panel space constraints
- Support design reviews and project milestone deliverables with complete, fabrication-ready documentation packages
LocationPosition is based on site in San Diego.
What are we looking for?- Associate degree in electrical/CAD drafting, electrical engineering technology, or related field; equivalent combination of education and hands-on SolidWorks Electrical Professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- 3+ years of relevant experience
- Experience with SolidWorks CAD ecosystem, specifically:
- SolidWorks Electrical Professional - both 3D harness/routing design and 2D schematic/cabling documentation.
- SolidWorks Mechanical - producing 2D detail and assembly drawings from existing models, including exploded views and presentation configurations. Full 3D part modeling is not required
- Demonstrated experience generating wire lists, cable harness drawings, and panel schematics for fabricated hardware.
- Experience generating dimensioned manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks per ASME Y14.5, including proper application of GD&T controls, tolerance callouts, and drawing notes for fabricated parts and assemblies
- Comfort working across varied project scopes, from cabling packages to full cabinet builds with PLCs and significant I/O requirements.
- Ability to work from system architecture diagrams, ICDs, and I/O lists produced by engineers, and deliver complete documentation
- Must be a US Person (US Citizen or US Permanent Resident)
