Full Job Description
About the role: magniX is seeking an EHS Manager to own and grow the company's Environmental, Health & Safety program. magniX has an established EHS foundation; this role takes ownership of that program and develops it into a scalable, multi-site function that keeps pace with the company's transition from R&D to production. The EHS Manager sets direction, owns compliance, and remains hands-on in day-to-day execution, ensuring our people, equipment, and operations meet the highest standards of health, safety, and environmental compliance across aerospace-grade battery, power electronics, and electric propulsion manufacturing and test environments.
This role begins as the company's senior EHS practitioner and individual contributor, with the opportunity to build and lead site-level EHS staff as magniX grows. This position reports to the Senior Manager of Operations & Industrialization within the Operations & Industrialization organization.
Primary Responsibilities
Program Ownership & Strategy
• Own the magniX EHS program across all company sites, including strategy, annual objectives, budget input, and continuous improvement.
• Author, maintain, and enforce written EHS programs and policies (e.g., Lockout/Tagout, Hazard Communication, Electrical Safety, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, PPE, Emergency Action, and Contractor Safety).
• Establish and report EHS performance metrics to Operations & Industrialization leadership, emphasizing leading indicators (near-miss reporting, corrective action closure, training completion, inspection findings) alongside lagging indicators (TRIR, DART).
• Develop the plan and business case for future EHS staffing as sites are stood up and the company scales; recruit and lead site EHS personnel when those positions are established.
• Align the program with recognized management system frameworks (e.g., ISO 45001 and ISO 14001) to position magniX for future certification and customer requirements.
Compliance, Risk & Training
• Serve as primary contact with regulators (WA L&I/DOSH, Dept. of Ecology, EPA, local fire authorities) and lead agency inspections and responses.
• Own injury and illness recordkeeping (OSHA 300/300A/301), partnering with HR on case management and workers' compensation.
• Lead environmental compliance, including hazardous waste, regulatory reporting, permits, and DOT hazmat shipping (including lithium batteries).
• Own hazard analysis (JHAs, risk assessments) and EHS review of new equipment, processes, and facility changes before commissioning.
• Lead incident investigations and root cause analysis, and drive corrective actions to verified closure.
• Oversee high-voltage electrical, lithium-ion battery, test cell, chemical, and emergency preparedness programs.
• Build and deliver EHS training for employees and contractors, partnering with operations leaders to foster a strong safety-reporting culture.
• Remain hands-on in execution, including inspections and waste stream management.
Required Qualifications
• Associate's degree and 7+ years of EHS experience, or Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of EHS experience, in aerospace, battery or energy storage, automotive/EV, electronics, or industrial manufacturing environments.
• Direct ownership of core EHS programs (e.g., Lockout/Tagout, Hazard Communication, incident management), not solely support of them.
• In-depth knowledge of OSHA General Industry (29 CFR 1910) and WA DOSH (WAC 296) standards, including Lockout/Tagout, electrical safety/NFPA 70E, HazCom, PPE and respiratory protection, machine guarding, and powered industrial trucks.
• Working knowledge of RCRA and Washington Dangerous Waste requirements and DOT hazmat shipping (49 CFR), including lithium batteries.
• Proven ability to influence without direct authority and to partner credibly with production, test, engineering, and executive leaders.
• Strong written communication and data skills, including authoring written programs and presenting metrics to leadership.
• Ability to work on-site in manufacturing and aerospace environments and travel regularly between magniX sites; valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field.
• Experience building, expanding, or maturing an EHS program in a growing organization; multi-site experience.
• Experience with lithium-ion battery safety, high-voltage systems, or electric propulsion test environments.
• CSP (or ASP with progress toward CSP); CIH, CHMM, OSHA 30, and 40-Hour HAZWOPER a plus.
• Interest in, and aptitude for, growing into people leadership as the EHS function expands.
Location: Applicants must be willing and able to commute to magniX's location in Everett, Washington.
Compensation & Benefits
• 100% company-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance (for employees & dependents).
• 4 weeks paid vacation + 1-week annual end-of-year shutdown, sick time, and 11 paid holidays.
• 401K retirement plan with industry leading 9.5% company contribution.
• Company paid Life insurance, AD&D, Short-Term and Long-Term disability insurance
• Catered lunches and quarterly company fun-day events!
