Job Summary
The Domain/Solutions Architect owns the technical direction, architecture, and roadmap for a core payments domain within an enterprise digital payments platform. The role focuses on designing secure, resilient, and scalable payment workflows across credit/debit, EBT SNAP, and EBT WIC transactions. The architect will define domain boundaries, data models, service contracts, and technical standards while guiding multiple engineering teams toward a consistent architecture. This is a hands-on role requiring expertise in C#/.NET, Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Kafka, durable workflow engines such as Temporal, payment processing, and enterprise architecture. The role also emphasizes transaction idempotency, recovery, reconciliation, observability, and PCI DSS compliance.
Key Responsibilities
• Own the payments domain architecture, technical roadmap, and key architectural decisions.
• Define domain boundaries, domain models, shared terminology, and service responsibilities using domain-driven design principles.
• Determine which services and workflows own specific business operations.
• Develop architecture specifications for Architecture Review Board (ARB) approval and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs).
• Design reliable payment operations using idempotency, sagas, compensation, outbox/inbox patterns, and reconciliation.
• Define API and event contracts with peer domains using OpenAPI, JSON Schema, and Protobuf.
• Establish trust boundaries that define data ownership, validation responsibilities, and consumer expectations.
• Build durable workflows using Temporal, including cross-domain calls through Temporal Nexus.
• Establish versioning standards for long-running workflows, including patching, build IDs, and replay testing.
• Design Kafka domain events with schema governance, retry mechanisms, and dead-letter queues.
• Architect payment workflows throughout the order lifecycle, including creation, modification, cancellation, finalization, and refunds.
• Design multi-tender payment orchestration across credit/debit, EBT SNAP, and EBT WIC.
• Architect integrations with payment processors and benefit providers for authorization, capture, voids, refunds, and reversals.
• Handle gateway timeouts and uncertain transaction outcomes without duplicate charges or unresolved transactions.
• Ensure EBT SNAP and WIC processing aligns with applicable USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) and state program requirements.
• Lead PCI DSS scope reduction, tokenization, encryption, and key rotation, including network tokens and Device Primary Account Number (DPAN) implementations.
• Extend payment capabilities to digital wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, and support split-tender transactions.
• Support third-party marketplace payments, including multi-capture, over-capture rules, and split settlement.
• Partner with Finance to ensure accurate reconciliation, transaction log (TLOG) reporting, and general ledger reporting.
• Define payment service-level objectives (SLOs), including authorization rates, capture success, refund success, and compensation failures.
• Implement resilience using Polly and Temporal retry policies.
• Ensure payment authorization operates within checkout timeout budgets across Azure and GCP environments.
• Implement distributed tracing across HTTP, Kafka, and Temporal using OpenTelemetry.
• Define testing strategies covering unit, contract, replay, gateway simulation, and load testing.
• Review production code, mentor senior engineers, and provide technical leadership to engineering teams.
• Lead feature-flagged migrations away from legacy processing paths.
• Use AI coding agents and context engineering to accelerate engineering delivery.
• Collaborate with Pricing, Orders Broker, and Order Finalization domains to ensure accurate payment processing from checkout through general ledger reconciliation.
• Serve as the architecture point of contact for payment processors, benefit providers, and Finance stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years building payment systems.
• Strong experience with domain-driven design, including bounded contexts, domain events, and context mapping.
• Expert-level C# and .NET 8+ development skills, with the ability to write and review production code.
• Production experience with Temporal or a similar durable workflow engine.
• Production experience with Apache Kafka.
• Hands-on experience with Azure PaaS services, including App Service, Cosmos DB, API Management (APIM), and Key Vault, or equivalent technologies on Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with containerization and running applications in Kubernetes.
• Production experience implementing idempotency, saga, and reconciliation patterns.
• Strong understanding of PCI DSS requirements and payment tokenization.
• Experience designing observability solutions using OpenTelemetry or application performance monitoring (APM) tools.
• Demonstrated ability to align multiple engineering teams around a shared architecture.
• Strong understanding of payment processing workflows, including authorization, capture, voids, refunds, reversals, and transaction reconciliation.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with Temporal Nexus or Worker Versioning.
• Experience with EBT SNAP and WIC payment processing.
• Experience with digital wallets, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.
• Experience integrating payment gateway APIs such as Aurus, Adyen, Fiserv, Worldpay, or Chase.
• Experience with network tokens, DPAN, multi-capture, and marketplace split settlement.
• Multi-cloud experience across Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with LaunchDarkly-driven migrations.
• Experience with .NET Aspire, Testcontainers, and Mockoon or WireMock.
• Experience with retail finance feeds, including TLOG, sales audit, and general ledger integrations.
• Experience in grocery or omnichannel retail environments.
• Additional Google Cloud Platform experience.
