DOE's Office of Environmental Management Graduate Fellowship Program is seeking graduate fellows to work on some of the nation's greatest cleanup efforts. Cleanup of highly complex waste, contaminated soil, and groundwater is one of the Department of Energy's most important environmental challenges. The Environmental Management (EM) Graduate Fellowship Program (EMGFP) provides recent graduates with an opportunity to conduct hands-on research that supports the mission of DOE's Office of EM.

Our research program focuses on two key areas:

• Understanding how ions interact, move, and separate at interfaces across a range of scales.
• Developing new capabilities to characterize separation processes in real time at these interfaces.

Our goal is to better understand how chemical and physical processes such as adsorption, solvation, and transport occur at well-defined interfaces. This knowledge will help us develop more efficient and selective methods for separating metal ions in environmental remediation.

We create and study novel interfaces using a combination of chemical and physical synthesis techniques. These interfaces are then characterized using spectroscopy, microscopy, and electrochemical methods. Molecular modeling provides additional insight by helping guide experiments, interpret results, and establish structure-function relationships to guide the design of improved separation processes.

This fellowship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in laboratory research, characterization techniques, data analysis, and environmental remediation while working with an interdisciplinary research team. Fellows will receive mentorship from experts in chemical separations and have opportunities to build both scientific and professional skills. You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas to be successful. We are looking for motivated, early-career scientists who are excited to learn, ask questions, and contribute to a collaborative research environment.

Due to sponsor funding requirements outlined in the MSIPP-EM SOW, eligibility for this position is limited to candidates who graduated with their undergrad or masters at a Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidates must have received a Bachelor's degree in chemistry, environmental sciences, chemical/environmental engineering, or related within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with interfacial characterization tools (spectroscopy/microscopy/electrochemistry).
• Experience preparing chemical solutions and analytical chemistry.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Experience with data analysis and graphing software.
