About the Role:

We are seeking a Director, Transmission Business Development to identify and develop electric transmission investment opportunities, with a primary focus on strategic partnerships with investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, and other transmission owners and developers. The role will focus primarily on the Midwest and will be responsible for originating opportunities, developing relationships with key industry decision makers, structuring partnerships, and negotiating commercial arrangements through execution. The ideal candidate will bring an established network of industry relationships, significant electric utility, RTO/ISO, or transmission experience, excellent communication skills, and strong commercial acumen. This position may require extensive travel.

Responsibilities

What you will do:

  • Identify and originate transmission development and investment opportunities throughout the Midwest.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with IOUs, electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, public power entities, transmission owners, developers, and other potential strategic partners.
  • Develop partnership strategies and commercial structures that align the interests of the company and prospective partners.
  • Lead discussions and negotiations regarding ownership, development responsibilities, capital contributions, governance, risk allocation, and other material commercial terms.
  • Lead or coordinate the negotiation and execution of term sheets, development agreements, joint development agreements, and other commercial arrangements.
  • Evaluate potential opportunities based on strategic fit, commercial attractiveness, development risk, regulatory considerations, and probability of success.
  • Coordinate with internal development, regulatory, legal, engineering, finance, and executive teams to evaluate and advance opportunities.
  • Monitor industry, regulatory, and transmission planning developments to identify emerging business opportunities.
  • Represent the company at utility meetings, industry conferences, stakeholder events, and other external forums.
  • Maintain an active pipeline of prospective opportunities and independently drive partnership opportunities through commercial agreement.
Qualifications

  • Have an established network of relationships within the electric utility and transmission industry, particularly in the Midwest.
  • Have demonstrated experience in business development, strategic partnerships, transmission development, RTO/ISO stakeholder affairs, or commercial negotiations.
  • Have experience working with or for IOUs, electric cooperatives, municipal utilities, transmission developers, or major transmission engineering/construction firms.
  • Understand electric transmission, utility business models, and regional transmission planning processes.
  • Have demonstrated ability to develop relationships with senior executives and other key decision makers.
  • Have experience negotiating commercial agreements, joint development arrangements, or other strategic partnerships.
  • Have excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Are self-motivated and able to operate independently while effectively coordinating with internal teams.
  • Have strong commercial and negotiation skills.
  • Are willing and able to travel extensively.
