Job Description

You will have the opportunity to oversee a Process Engineering group of approximately 90 team members who primarily work on projects in the Food, Beverage, Beer, Wine, and Spirits industries. Here are a couple of example projects to take a closer look at Haskell: Gallo Production Facility and Bently Heritage Distillery.

Scope of Position

The Director of Process Engineering administers and manages Project Delivery Group or office discipline staff and design processes in respective discipline. The Director of Process Engineering serves as Engineer on assigned projects and works with the Practice Area Leader to develop and implement corporate discipline related goals and initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Application of Knowledge of Design (Conceptual Design):

    • Ensures execution of the practice's scope of services that meets customers project requirements.

    • Applies experience and engineering knowledge to develop technical proposals and execute projects.

    • Plans, conducts and coordinates all discipline engineering functions based on their review of a project scope of work with focus on design, operation, and material/equipment selection.

    • Effectively communicates with other Engineers, Project Managers, Clients and Suppliers.

    • Directs mentors to, and follows, engineering project procedures.

    • Recommends information for in-house resource centers, libraries, publications, codes, standards, testing equipment and similar materials relating to the discipline.

    • Creates presentations and articles on technical topics suitable for publication and training for both internal and external audiences. May include articles, slide presentations and videos.

    • Develops training programs and makes presentations to staff.

    • Assists Practice Area Leader in review and selection of discipline specific analysis and modeling software.

    • Actively participates in development and maintenance of design standards, technical details, standard specifications, checklists and production procedures for the delivery group discipline. Reviews/enforces compliance with standards.

    • Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of new processes and products and stays current with design and construction technology and methods/trends.

  • Detailed Design:

    • Participates in project strategy meetings, develops design concepts and recommends systems.

    • Responsible for the production of well-organized, finished drawings of good appearance, accuracy, clarity and correctness.

    • Maintains orderly work files and prepares clear, well written correspondence.

    • Complies with state regulations regarding professional registrations.

    • Researches and is responsible for discipline design compliance with proposal/client criteria.

    • Executes or coordinates with designers for layout.

    • Defines and performs and/or checks engineering calculations and analyses.

    • Provides technical assistance during design and construction for problem solving when special expertise is needed.

    • Responsible for placement of safety symbols on construction documents as necessary for discipline.

    • Leads technical review of project technical requirements with team to define work plan

    • Lead discipline project teams in design as required, ensuring accuracy and completeness of construction documents and specifications.

    • Develops or verifies utility matrixes, equipment lists, equipment specifications and controls.

    • Develops and/or reviews discipline specific drawings, schedules and calculations, and provides guidance and input on documents.

    • Signs and seals design documents when assigned as Professional of Record. Maintains ethics and professionalism.

    • Keeps apprised of new technologies and assists in the incorporation of the new technologies into the A/E practice and discipline design standards.

    • Participates in corporate steering committees.

    • Assures adherence within the group to the discipline quality plan and procedures.

    • Serves as discipline resource in corporate safety programs related to design.

    • Establishes procedures for assuring design and construction Quality standards. Responsible for discipline quality assurance and assists quality staff.

    • Provides leadership in implementation of corporate quality processes.

  • Construction Support

    • Participates in plant surveys or field inspections, development of solutions to field problems, preparation of field orders, addenda and record drawings.

    • Provides clarification of the design, responding to Contractor inquiries, and serves a lead role for site support for installation, start-up and commissioning efforts.

    • Effectively manages project startup, commissioning, verification and closeout tasks.

    • Provides timely solutions to field problems and prepares field orders, addenda and record drawings.

    • Advises and assists Construction Project Managers, Superintendents and Subcontractors in the interpretation and clarification of construction documents.

    • Participates as requested in construction inspection to monitor compliance with design intent, construction drawings and specifications. Inspections may occur at the clients site or at a vendor. Prepares inspection reports.

    • Researches and updates project management team on critical permitting activities and impact to overall schedule.

    • Reviews financial performance of project teams.

    • Coordinates to incorporate lessons learned on projects for continuous improvement.

    • Implements corporate initiatives on streamlining systems and procedures.

    • Provides technical guidance and strategy assistance in development of design concepts (including proposals) and participates in strategic planning meetings when his expertise is requested.

    • Ability to actively engage multiple project assignments and prioritize competing project demands.

    • Fulfills other duties as assigned by A/E Discipline Leader.

  • Project Management

    • Represents team in both internal and external (Clients/Vendors) design reviews.

    • Prepares presentation materials.

    • Assists the project team with the identification of consulting partners and pre-qualifies them for appropriate services.

    • Leads and/or coordinates Scope of Work (SOW) and develops/assembles all technical drawings required to issue Bid Packages.

    • Assists with evaluating bids for technical conformance, participates in overall Vendor selection and provides technical support to the Procurement team.

    • Reviews and comments on vendor submittal documents for conformance with contract documents.

    • Monitors client requests against the proposal and known scope of work. Develops engineering change notices under the direction of the Project Manager.

    • Leads and/or coordinates work with other disciplines and participates in interdisciplinary coordination checks and QA/QC reviews to minimize deficiencies, errors and omissions in drawings and specifications.

    • Leads in creating and/or updating Standards and Procedures for executing projects effectively and efficiently.

  • Planning, Scheduling and Profitability

    • Creates discipline work plan for assigned projects. Monitors workload status, advising director of difficulties in accomplishing schedules.

    • Develops and disseminates discipline information to discipline, other AE, construction and support unit staff to broaden their knowledge and understanding of discipline terminology, goals and activities.

    • Assists in coordinating information with and monitoring efforts/costs of discipline-related outside consultants.

    • Tracks actual hours worked each week for themselves and their project team, and informs director if deliverables are tracking within schedule and budget.

    • Assists RFP responses, developing proposals including the preparation of estimates, schedules and other proposal documents.

    • Assures adherence to drawing production strategy.

  • Professional Development

    • Responsible for discipline staff reviews, career/professional development, mentoring and technical competence. Encourages and assists in registration, continuing education and expansion of technical knowledge. Recommends salary adjustments and bonuses for discipline staff.

    • Encouraged to consider further educational opportunities.

    • Participates in the professional community and trade organizations within discipline to promote Haskell and demonstrate Haskells thought leadership. May include participation in professional or trade association committees, officer positions, or publications of articles.

    • Owns/advises/participates in quality assurance/quality control/best practices.

    • Assists with defining career paths for discipline and office staff.

    • Monitors staff loading and advises on staffing levels.

    • Assists in recruiting discipline staff.

    • Provides technical, peer review of design documents.

    • Serves as champion of sustainable design for projects and knows how to implement into projects.

    • Designs and supervises designs per corporate goals and standards.

    • Assists with defining goals for engineering staff within group or office.

    • Manages project staffing assignments for group or office discipline.

  • Leadership

    • Adheres to established company standards and policies.

    • Directs technical efforts of discipline subordinates.

    • Self-starter who works well within groups and individually to further improve and contribute to the growth and effectiveness of the Department

    • Provides technical guidance, mentorship and training to discipline.

  • Participates in applicable corporate initiatives and programs as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
  • Develops and engages strategic plans specific to the practice area that aligns with company values, vision, and long-term goals as assigned by the Chief Engineer.
  • Identifies and communicates project and non-project risks and develop mitigation plan(s) for the practice area.
  • Work closely with Chief Engineer in developing and administering group training.
  • Mentors managers, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and ensuring the team has the necessary skills and resources.
  • Travel - 30%. You will have a lot of control over your travel schedule; it is primarily meeting with project teams in Haskell offices and going to clients/project sites.

Education & Years of Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience required.
  • 15+ years of experience within the process engineering discipline as well as experience in design-build and/or construction.
  • PE license strongly preferred, but not required.

Qualifications

  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • BIM: Manager level proficiency with Autodesk REVIT and AutoCAD programs.
  • Ability to read and effectively interpret building construction documentation and associated reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills (written and verbal) to effectively work with others and interact with all levels of management.
  • Excellent organizational skills to handle/prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong negotiation/conflict resolution skills.
  • Safety: Successfully completed or will successfully complete within one year any required corporate safety programs (OSHA 10 hour, etc.)

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
