Role Roadmap

As Kalshi scales, we are looking for a Director of Tax to build and own the company's tax function end-to-end. Today, tax compliance, provision support, planning, and audit defense are handled by external advisors alongside members of the broader Finance and Accounting team. This role will centralize those responsibilities under a single in-house leader who will design and run Kalshi's tax function from the ground up.

The scope is intentionally broad and highly strategic. You will own federal and state income tax compliance, state tax examinations, ASC 740 provision support, excise and transaction-tax positions, information reporting, international tax planning, and all external advisor relationships. In addition, you will serve as a key advisor to the business on tax implications tied to new products, market expansion, and evolving entity structures. In the near term, you will take ownership of active state examinations, establish a company-wide tax calendar, strengthen excise tax positions, support the ASC 740 provision process, and improve information-reporting infrastructure. Over time, you will build the systems, controls, processes, and team needed to support a public-company-ready tax function and Kalshi's international growth.

What You'll Do
  • Own federal, state, indirect, and international tax matters across Kalshi's entities
  • Oversee federal consolidated and multistate income tax compliance and manage the relationship with external tax preparers
  • Lead state tax examinations and controversy matters, including response strategy, document production, deadlines, and coordination with outside advisors
  • Own Kalshi's position on federal and state excise and transaction-based taxes, including research, documentation, and monitoring of regulatory developments
  • Own ASC 740 tax provision support and tax-related financial statement disclosures in partnership with Technical Accounting
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive tax calendar covering federal, state, international, and information-reporting obligations
  • Lead tax planning for new products, new markets, international expansion, and entity-structuring decisions
  • Evaluate VAT, GST, withholding, transfer pricing, nexus, and apportionment considerations as the business expands
  • Own information reporting, including 1099 processes and customer tax documentation
  • Direct and challenge external tax advisors, including PwC and EY, while managing scopes, budgets, and auditor-independence requirements
  • Build scalable tax processes, internal controls, and technology infrastructure, including systems required for IPO and SOX readiness
  • Partner closely with Finance, Accounting, Legal, and business leaders on novel tax questions in a rapidly evolving regulatory environment
  • Assess the long-term structure of the tax organization and build the internal team as the company's needs grow

What You Bring
  • 10-15 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting, industry, or a combination of both
  • Active US CPA
  • Deep corporate income tax expertise with hands-on ASC 740 experience in a PCAOB-audited environment
  • Strong multistate and SALT experience, including meaningful exposure to tax audits, examinations, or controversy
  • Experience operating in complex, transaction-heavy businesses; financial services, fintech, exchanges, or similar environments are particularly relevant
  • The ability to independently develop and defend tax positions where precedent may be limited or evolving
  • Experience directing Big 4 or other external advisors and the judgment to challenge recommendations rather than simply defer to them
  • Strong written communication skills and experience producing tax positions and documentation that can withstand scrutiny from auditors and tax authorities
  • Comfort operating in a highly regulated environment and partnering with Legal when tax issues intersect with regulatory or litigation matters
  • A builder mentality and willingness to operate as the primary in-house tax expert while establishing the function
  • Exposure to excise taxes, transaction-based taxes, and information reporting is strongly preferred
  • International tax experience, including VAT/GST, withholding, or transfer pricing, is a plus
  • Experience preparing a company for an IPO or operating within a public-company tax function is a strong plus
