Director of Obstetric Anesthesia
The Department of Anesthesiology, Joe R. & Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio is seeking an Associate or Professor rank Director of Obstetric Anesthesia for a faculty position to provide anesthetic care at the University Health System Women & Children's Hospital as well as other clinical sites.
The Women's & Children's Hospital is the first hospital of its kind in South Texas. The facility is a 14-story, 300-bed hospital with a state-of-the-art labor deck, four dedicated operating rooms, and attached Level 1 primary hospital with a Leapfrog "A" safety designation. Featuring a Level IV NICU and Level IV Maternal Center, this hospital is staffed by expert anesthesiologists, obstetricians, maternal fetal medicine doctors, and nurses with Magnet recognition. U.S. News & World Report named the Women & Children's Hospital as a 2026 High Performing Maternity Care Hospital for uncomplicated pregnancies.
Job Description:
The Director of Obstetric Anesthesia at UT Health San Antonio provides strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for obstetric anesthesia services at the University Health Women & Children's Hospital. This role is responsible for advancing patient safety, quality, education, scholarly activity, and multidisciplinary collaboration across a labor and delivery program that serves a complex maternal population.
Support:
• The Obstetric Anesthesia Directorship conveys a stipend and protected non-clinical time.
• The director will have access to departmental scheduling and analytics support, as well as customary administrative support.
• The director will be encouraged to design their clinical schedule within departmental structures and policies.
Core responsibilities:
• Lead the obstetric anesthesia service line for labor and delivery, cesarean delivery, obstetric emergencies, and high-risk maternal care.
• Partner with departmental, nursing, maternal-fetal medicine, and hospital leadership to support seamless, evidence-based care.
• Oversee development, implementation, and improvement of clinical protocols.
• Promote quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes analytics in partnership with the departmental QI program and available resources.
• Support staffing models, clinical coverage, and workflow design that align with hospital and departmental missions.
• Foster education, mentorship, scholarly activity, and interprofessional training within the department and broader institution.
Qualifications:
• MD or DO with board certification or board eligibility in Anesthesiology.
• Fellowship training in Obstetric Anesthesiology preferred, comparable experience considered.
• Demonstrated practice in comprehensive obstetric anesthesia care.
• Strong background in clinical leadership, quality improvement, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Experience teaching in an academic medical setting.
• Ability to work effectively across departments and support a culture of safety, professionalism, and accountability.
