Role: Director of Laboratory
Location: Palmer, AK
Schedule: Full-Time - Days
Job Summary
The Director, Laboratory oversees a wide variety of administrative, fiscal, and technical activities to ensure the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory and compliance with corporate policies. The Director, Lab is responsible for the quality control program, quality assurance, and the point of care testing programs within the clinical laboratory. The Director, Lab plans, organizes, directs, controls, and evaluates the work of the clinical laboratory and coordinating it with other areas of the hospital and is responsible for all personnel including hiring, discipline, staff development, evaluation, payroll. The Director, Lab acts as technical supervisor for clinical laboratory functions off site and owned by the hospital and assures the laboratory meets all regulatory requirements. (CAP, AABB, JCAHO, CLIA etc)
Essential Functions
37Completes employee evaluations in a timely manner and assesses staff competencies on an ongoing basis.
37Demonstrates proficiency at hospital wide and/or department specific computer software and technology.
37Demonstrates fiscal accountability for department resources and the ability to achieve outcomes within allocated resources.
37Communicates and supports the hospital's mission, vision, and values as well as departmental goals to all staff.
37Defines performance objectives and metrics for the department.
37Demonstrates population appropriate skill sets for all relevant patient populations.
37Collaborates with other departments to problem solve ongoing issues that impact department/organization goals and/or patient care delivery.
37Incorporates quality improvement data and/or patient satisfaction data into departmental goals.
37Ensures accurate and timely reporting of department payroll.
37Effectively plans the goals, objectives, and work flow of the clinical laboratory to achieve optimal performance.
37Assures the laboratory is compliant with all regulatory agency (CAP, AABB, Joint Commision, CLIA etc) requirements.
37Successfully meets department productivity goals by scheduling staff according to workload.
37Effectively keeps abreast of changes in laboratory medicine and keeps SRMC laboratory current with these changes.
37Evaluates the capitol equipment needs of the laboratory and makes responsible recommendations for procurement.
37Assures the laboratory meets corporate compliance policies.
37Assures laboratory billing issues and errors are corrected in a timely manner.
37Effectively promotes, encourages, and provides continuing education opportunities for laboratory staff.
37Represents the department at appropriate meetings and/or committees and actively participates in the facilities' PI program.
37Works diligently to recruit and retain competent staff in the department and effectively manages staff disciplinary actions.
37Manages departmental inventory, ordering, storage, and utilization as appropriate
37Performs other duties as assigned.
37Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

37Provides leadership, mentorship and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.
37Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources. Consults with leadership on any potential staffing issues.
37Conducts performance evaluations, sets goals and provides feedback to staff on their performance and development.
37Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight
37Collaborates with hospital leadership to set the strategic direction for the department, including budgeting, resource allocation and long-term planning.
37Monitors expenditures, ensuring cost-effective delivery of services.
37Evaluates and implements new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.
37Develops and implements departmental policies and procedures and protocols to optimize quality and overall efficiencies.
37Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance
37Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory bodies. May oversee the accreditation process with relevant agencies ensuring that services meet or exceed industry standards.
37Participates in audits, inspections and accreditation processes as applicable.
37Follows established quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency and safety.
37Collaboration and Communication
37Works closely with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.
37Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.
37Staff Responsibilities
37May work in a staff role, when required. Ensures that duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting all competencies established for that job.
Qualifications
37Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or Physical Science (needs to meet requirements for High Complexity under CLIA) required
37Master's Degree preferred
373-5 years of experience in closely related field with Bachelor's degree required
373-5 years of previous leadership experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
37MLS - Medical Lab Scientist (Formally MT Certification) ASCP, AAB, CLS, or equivalent required and
37State license where applicable required
