Job Description:The State University of New York (SUNY) seeks two Directors of Holistic Advisement to support a systemwide effort to strengthen advising and student support across SUNY campuses within the Office of Student Success.
Reporting directly to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Transformational Initiatives, the Director and their counterpart (team of two) will build and strengthen proactive, data-informed, holistic advisement practices that help students stay on track, complete gateway courses, build credit momentum, and graduate on time. The work will support the Chancellor's student success agenda and systemwide Academic Momentum Campaign.
The Director will work with campuses to assess current advisement practices, provide training and technical assistance, develop clear guidance and tools, coordinate professional learning, and help campus teams use data to guide outreach, referrals, academic planning, and follow-up practices. The role requires significant campus-based leadership experience in advisement and student success work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead a systemwide effort to improve holistic advisement practices in partnership with campuses and SUNY System Administration offices.
- Work with campus leaders and advisement teams to understand current advisement structures, training needs, student data tools, and barriers to proactive support.
- Develop clear guidance and practical tools for holistic advisement, including outreach, referrals, academic planning, course progression, credit accumulation, documentation, and follow-up practices.
- Design and deliver training sessions, webinars, workshops, guides, checklists, templates, and other resources for advisors, faculty advisors, advisement leaders, and student success staff.
- Provide technical assistance, office hours, professional learning meetings, and targeted follow-up to help campuses put stronger advisement practices into daily use.
- Coordinate a professional learning community that allows campuses to share promising practices, common challenges, tools, and lessons learned.
- Help campuses use available student data, early alerts, degree progress information, and advising technologies to identify students who need support and connect them to the right resources.
- Monitor campus progress, gather feedback, summarize lessons learned, and prepare updates, reports, presentations, and briefing materials for SUNY leadership.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education advisement, student success, academic affairs, academic support, or a closely related area.
- Significant campus-based leadership experience in advisement, student success, or academic support, including responsibility for programs, staff, operations, policy, or cross-functional campus work.
- Demonstrated understanding of holistic advisement, proactive student support, academic momentum, and strategies that improve retention and completion.
- Experience developing or delivering professional training, guidance materials, technical assistance, or campus support related to advisement or student success.
- Strong writing, presentation, facilitation, communication, and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively with campus and system-level leaders.
Preferred Qualifications:- Master's degree from an accredited institution.
- Experience leading or significantly improving academic advisement at the campus level.
- Experience using student data, early alerts, degree progress information, or advising technologies to guide outreach and student support.
- Experience working with multi-campus initiatives, professional learning communities, technical assistance, or systemwide student success efforts.
Additional Information: - Please Note: This position is a one-year temporary appointment, with the possibility of an extension.
- Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.
- Salary is dependent on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, experience, education, training, and certifications. The range for this position is $115,000-$125,000 annually.
- The state title for this position is Senior Staff Associate (SL-5) and is part of the United University Professions Union.
