Full Job Description
Director, McKesson Ventures Platform

McKesson Ventures

San Francisco, CA; Boston, MA; Dallas, TX; or Columbus, OH; potential flexibility for ideal candidate

Current Need

McKesson Ventures is a strategic venture firm backed by McKesson Corporation, investing in early- and growth-stage digital health and tech-enabled healthcare services companies. We are seeking a high-performing, independent, intellectually curious candidate to serve as a strategic partner within our platform function to support the McKesson Ventures’ mandates to:

  • Bring insights and relationships from the venture and innovation ecosystem into McKesson to inform the long-term growth strategy of McKesson and drive strategic partnerships between the external ecosystem and McKesson
  • Support internal vetting and diligence efforts for new investments and investment focus areas
  • Support our portfolio companies’ post-investment in achieving their highest potential, including developing commercial relationships with both McKesson and other customers
  • Build and maintain a brand as a leading healthcare venture and growth investment fund

This individual will own insight generation, content production, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building for a set of focus areas (example areas: specialty pharmacy, oncology, ophthalmology, clinical trials, life sciences commercial services, specialty provider MSOs) — operating with significant independence while partnering closely with senior members of the Platform team. Success in this role requires knowing or learning and staying up to date on McKesson’s business and strategic priorities to translate market trends and knowledge of the venture and growth ecosystem into relevant insights and introductions for McKesson audiences. This is a comprehensive venture platform role: the person we hire will move fluidly from deep research to polished deliverable in both written and presentation format to stakeholder conversation and will be expected to operate more like a peer than a direct report to the broader Insights leadership.

The mix of the various responsibilities (insight generation, content production, stakeholder engagement, portfolio development, marketing) will vary throughout the year and from year to year and should be driven by the candidate. Strong candidates will:

  • Have comfort with, interest in, and skills for all the responsibility types
  • Be able to effectively assess and prioritize where to spend their time amongst the various responsibilities to drive the greatest benefit for the team, the portfolio, and McKesson
  • Be comfortable with a responsibility and task mix that evolves and changes with team needs and priorities
  • Incorporate AI into their work: explore ways to be more efficient, create higher quality work, and make possible new types of work using AI tools

Position Description

Insight Generation & Research

  • Monitor and synthesize relevant market developments, competitive dynamics, and emerging trends within assigned segments (e.g., oncology, pharmacy, healthcare data, value-based care)
  • Support and, over time, drive the generation and maintenance of market segment theses — identifying new theses, refreshing existing ones, and building evidentiary frameworks that make the case compellingly
  • Conduct targeted, scope-defined research on specific deals, companies, or topics, which may include diligence support and interviews with leaders within McKesson; produce clear, high-quality outputs under time pressure
  • Provide rapid, well-reasoned takes on companies, market developments, or industry news in response to ad hoc requests from McKesson stakeholders and Ventures leadership

Content & Collateral Production

  • Create high-quality presentations, newsletters, blogs, videos, and other thought leadership collateral that distill complex ideas for internal and external audiences
  • Own content development for assigned segments from first draft through final delivery, with a high editorial bar — strong visual and written communication skills are a must
  • Contribute to the team's broader content calendar and investment lookback materials; bring creativity and a clear point of view to how insights are packaged and communicated

Stakeholder & Relationship Engagement

  • Build and maintain relationships with priority stakeholders within the McKesson business unit(s) — serving as a credible, go-to thought partner on market dynamics and portfolio activity
  • Prepare and support senior team members ahead of panel appearances, external meetings, and stakeholder engagements; occasionally represent the team in these settings directly
  • Identify opportunities for McKesson Ventures to add value through insight sharing, event participation, or strategic introductions

Portfolio Development Support

  • Support portfolio development activities for select portfolio companies, including opportunity identification, deal design input, and relationship facilitation
  • Operate as a connector between portfolio companies and relevant McKesson stakeholders, leveraging your understanding of both sides of the relationship

Marketing & External Presence

  • Manage third party media consultant for weekly social/web activity
  • Contribute to LinkedIn and web presence for McKesson Ventures, including identifying content opportunities and drafting posts that reflect the team's voice and perspective
  • Support event identification, planning, and execution within your segment — from partner and venue coordination through day-of activities and follow-up

Minimum Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in healthcare management consulting, venture capital platform/portfolio development, or a healthcare industry operator / startup environment
  • Direct experience in pharma tech, health tech, or tech-enabled healthcare services strongly preferred; deep familiarity with at least one of McKesson's core verticals (oncology, pharmacy, biopharma services) is a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to own end-to-end work product — from initial research framing through final stakeholder delivery — with limited day-to-day oversight
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategic relationships and influence without authority
  • Direct experience presenting to senior stakeholders, small and large format settings and exercising judgement to match tone and audience

Critical Skills and Experience

  • Lead with purpose and humility, including:
    • Relationship building and influence: Able to develop trust and credibility with senior stakeholders across a large, matrixed organization; skilled at influencing without authority
  • Create our future, including:
    • Strategic and analytical thinking: Ability to evaluate complex market dynamics, build structured arguments, and develop clear, defensible points of view; comfort synthesizing ambiguous or incomplete information into actionable insight
    • Intellectual Curiosity: Genuine interest in healthcare innovation, market dynamics, and the venture ecosystem; stays current on trends and proactively brings outside perspectives into the team's thinking
  • Deliver results that matter, including:
    • Independent judgment and drive: Self-starter with strong initiative; able to identify what matters, prioritize accordingly, and drive work to completion without waiting to be directed; fails fast, learns, and moves forward
    • Communications skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey complex ideas; ability to develop rapport and credibility, promote ideas and proposals persuasively, and craft deliverables that are both rigorous and readable
    • Content Craft and Creative Range: Brings a clear point of view to how insights are packaged and communicated; comfortable moving across formats — from a detailed research memo to a punchy LinkedIn post to a keynote-ready slide deck

Education

  • 4-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience

Physical Requirements

  • General office demands. Travel up to 15–20% expected, including occasional attendance at industry events and McKesson site visits.
  • Must be authorized to work in the US. Sponsorship is not available for this position.
