Full Job Description
Director Dev Ops & QA Engineering
Job Description

We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to build and lead our Quality Engineering and DevOps functions at Butterfly Network. This is a high-impact role sitting at the intersection of reliability, velocity, and quality - responsible for ensuring our software and infrastructure meet the rigorous standards required of a regulated medical device company. As Director, you will own both the QA and DevOps disciplines end-to-end: setting the strategy for test automation, CI/CD pipelines, release processes, infrastructure reliability, and developer experience. You will lead a distributed team spanning onshore and offshore engineers, partnering closely with product engineering, security, and regulatory teams to ship fast without sacrificing quality or compliance. As part of our team, your core responsibilities will
  • Lead, grow, and inspire a high-performing team of QA and DevOps engineers spanning onshore and offshore - building a culture of ownership, craft, and continuous improvement.
  • Define and execute the strategy for quality engineering across the organization - automated testing frameworks, test coverage standards, regression pipelines, and quality metrics.
  • Own the DevOps and platform engineering roadmap - CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, deployment automation, cloud cost optimization, and developer tooling.
  • Partner with engineering leadership to establish release management processes that support high-velocity delivery while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements (HIPAA, FDA, SOC 2).
  • Drive observability and site reliability engineering (SRE) practices - on-call processes, incident response, runbooks, SLAs/SLOs, and post-mortems. Recruit, retain, and develop top QA and DevOps talent; build a team that other engineers love working with.
  • Establish clear quality gates across the SDLC - from PR review through production - reducing defect escape rates and improving release confidence.
  • Champion a security-first mindset, ensuring infrastructure and release processes meet security and compliance standards.
  • Serve as a cross-functional partner to product engineering, regulatory, IT, and security teams to align on standards and unblock delivery
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, QA, DevOps, or platform engineering, with at least 3 to 5 years in an engineering management or senior technical leadership role.
  • Proven experience leading both QA and DevOps/platform functions - either combined or separately - with a track record of building high-performing teams. Demonstrated success managing distributed teams, including offshore or nearshore engineers across multiple time zones.
  • Deep expertise in CI/CD pipeline design and implementation, release automation, and developer experience tooling.
  • Strong background in test strategy and automation - familiarity with frameworks for unit, integration, end-to-end, and performance testing.
  • Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred), containerization (Docker, ECS, EKS), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CDK, or equivalent).
  • Experience working in regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, FDA, or similar) with an understanding of compliance requirements for software and infrastructure.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills; comfortable operating at the director level and presenting to senior leadership.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.

Ideally, you also have these skills/experiences/attributes (but it's ok if you don't!):
  • Experience in health tech, medical devices, or other regulated industries
  • Familiarity with SRE principles and practices - SLOs, error budgets, chaos engineering
  • Experience with observability tooling (Datadog, New Relic, Grafana, or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of security tooling - SAST, DAST, dependency scanning integrated into CI/CD
  • Experience with mobile QA (iOS/Android) in addition to web and API testing
  • Containerization and orchestration technologies such as Docker, ECS, EKS Opensearch or other Lucene-based search engines HIPAA, PHI, and PII compliance
